Program Topic:  A State Bank for Washington

April 13, 2011

The Wall Street banks through their reckless behavior have caused Washington citizens to lose their jobs, their pensions, their homes.

The purpose of the Washington Investment Trust, State Bank for Washington, is to keep Washington tax money in Washington so it can be invested in Washington State.

HB 1320 introduced this session in the State Legislature would establish a Task Force to formulate how a Washington Investment Trust would be set up for the benefit of the state and its citizens. At the present time the big banks make money off our taxes which are placed in their banks until the state needs to use it. There is a better way and we have a model: The Bank of North Dakota is a publically owned bank that spared that state the worst effects of the present recession.

Guest Speakers John Repp and Cindy Cole are members of the 34th District Democrats and have been working on legislation for the Washington Investment Trust with Representative Bob Hasegawa of the 11th District. Jean Darsie is part of Just and Sustainable Economy Group, a committee of Western Washington Fellowship of 'Reconciliation and an activist on many fronts.
