Program Topic:  A State Bank for Washington

April 13, 2011

The Wall Street banks through their reckless behavior have caused Washington citizens to lose their jobs, their pensions, their homes.

The purpose of the Washington Investment Trust, State Bank for Washington, is to keep Washington tax money in Washington so it can be invested in Washington State.

HB 1320 introduced this session in the State Legislature would establish a Task Force to formulate how a Washington Investment Trust would be set up for the benefit of the state and its citizens. At the present time the big banks make money off our taxes which are placed in their banks until the state needs to use it. There is a better way and we have a model: The Bank of North Dakota is a publically owned bank that spared that state the worst effects of the present recession.

Guest Speakers John Repp and Cindy Cole are members of the 34th District Democrats and have been working on legislation for the Washington Investment Trust with Representative Bob Hasegawa of the 11th District. Jean Darsie is part of Just and Sustainable Economy Group, a committee of Western Washington Fellowship of 'Reconciliation and an activist on many fronts.

Wondering how to be more involved?  Volunteer with the 32nd District Democrats!  Volunteering is a great way to promote the causes and issues important to you!

Sustainable works

At our February Monthly Meeting Richard Wells of SustainableWorks presented information on bringing low cost home energy audits and retrofits to our community. Having an energy efficient home is the first step towards employing renewable energy.

We are asking for your help in getting the word out to the Shoreline Community.  Can you help drop off program announcements tomorrow?

SustainableWorks combines an energy audit and retrofit with utility incentives, federal energy efficiency funding and loan financing working with all residents, regardless of income and coordinates with the state low income westernization program.

Conserving energy is THE most important step homeowners can take to reduce our use of important energy resources.

Teams of enthusiastic volunteers will be heading out Saturday morning to distribute literature.  This is a simple literature drop, we're not doorbelling or talking about programs.  We need help putting door hanger announcements at every house in selected Shoreline neighborhoods. Many hands make light work and we hope to see you on Saturday.

King County Democrats Legislative Action Team

Here is a link to the King County Democrats Legislative Action Committee's Bill Status Chart, updated as of Saturday. We hope you will print it out and use it. The next legislative cutoff date for bills to clear policy committees is March 25th. The list is only 3 pages, because so many of our priority bills died at the cutoff.

These include Rep. Mary Lou Dickerson's HB 1550 and Sen. Prentice's SB 5598 to legalize, regulate and tax marijuana; Rep. Billig and Sen. White's HB 1271/ SB 5194 limiting the use of fertilizer containing phosphorous; Sen. Nelson's 5231 regarding making children's products safe from toxic chemicals (also Rep. Dickerson's HB 1319); Sen. Kline's SB 5234 creating a medicine return program (also HB 1370, Rep. Van De Wege); Sen. Kline's SB 5236 reforming the 3-strikes law for certain low-level offenders; Rep. Kelly's campaign finance disclosure HB 1732; Rep. Reykdahl's HB 1668 and Sen. Nelson's SB 5297 that would have strengthened the citizen initiative process; and Sen. Nelson's Clean Water Jobs Act SB 5604 (also Rep. Ormsby's HB 1735).

We thank all these champions of our Democratic values and the lobbyists who worked hard behind the scenes for our coalition partners. We sincerely hope to see them back next year.

Please continue to advocate for our priorities and budget issues. Our budget represents our Democratic values, even in the Great Recession.
