"Anybody who travels the I-5 corridor in our state knows that we need to find new, efficient options to get commuters and commerce moving. And anybody interested in boosting our state's economy knows that now is a great time to take action."

- Patty Murray
Dear ,

"[T]he true engine of job creation in this country will always be America's businesses. But government can create the conditions necessary for businesses to expand and hire more workers."
- President Barack Obama - January 27, 2010

In Washington, unemployment for December 2009 was projected to be 9.5%. While in the Seattle area, things are a little better, we know that many of you are struggling just to get by. We encourage you to contact our Senators, Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell and tell them that we cannot afford to wait for our government to act on important legislation that will help all Americans. Our neighbors are hurting more.

Our legislators in Olympia are facing difficult choices with how to balance our State's budget. At the January meeting of the Washington State Democrats, we passed a resolution encouraging the Legislature to raise state revenues, including a state income tax on high-income earners. Please tell Senator Darlene Fairley, and State Representative Maralyn Chase and Ruth Kagi why you oppose cuts to state services.

Finally, please remember to mail in your ballots today for the local school bonds and levies. Election Day is February 9. We encourage everyone to vote for the Edmonds, Northshore and Shoreline School bonds and levies, as well as the King County Library levy. For more information, please check out the links: Edmonds, Lake Washington, Northshore, Shoreline. In Shoreline, you can find volunteer opportunities, including cell phone parties and "rah rah" locations at http://voteyesforshorelineschools.org.

Fired up!

New LogoWSDCC Meeting Report

At the Washington State Democratic Central Committee, the body nominated Jay Inslee and Jim McDermott as the Democratic candidates for the 1st and 7th Congressional Districts, adopted the 2010 budget, the 2010 Affirmative Action plan for the Caucus and Convention Cycle.

In the 1st Congressional District subcaucus, Chris Roberts nominated Jay Inslee for reelection, and was seconded by Elaine Phelps. The nomination passed unanimously.

In the 2010 budget, the staff of the Washington State Democrats will receive a 5% increase in salary. During the election season, there will be 10 field offices across the state and 20 field organizers. This budget was opposed by both of representatives of the 32nd LD.

The body also amended the state Charter to changed the number of meetings from 4 to 3, abolish the Judicial Review board, and amend the charter in relation to precinct caucuses.

Finally, of note, the 2012 State Convention will be held in Seattle.
2010 Legislative District Caucus Information

Precinct Caucuses

In 2010, there will not be any precinct caucuses. Instead, the District is sponsoring several community discussions about recent political events, including the most recent Supreme Court decision on campaign finance, a statewide income tax, the environment, and others. These discussions will occur between February 11 and February 20.

We will have all of the details about these discussions in the next newsletter.

Legislative District Caucus

Our Legislative District Caucus will be on Sunday, March 14 at 1:00 pm at Shorecrest High School. Every voter (and those who will turn 18 before the November 2010 election) of the 32nd Legislative District, who identifies as a Democrat, is eligible to attend and participate in the Caucus. Everyone may attend the Caucus.

At the Caucus, we will adopt a platform for the 32nd District Democrats, and elect delegates to the Washington State Convention.

The minimum statewide goals of participation at the 2010 State Convention set by the Washington State Democrats are:
  • 4% African American
  • 8% Hispanic/Latino
  • 3% Enrolled Native Americans
  • 8% Asian/Pacific Islanders
  • 3% Persons with Disabilities
  • 7% LGBT
  • 3% Youth (Age 17-24)
More information about the Caucus can be found on our website - 32democrats.org.

County Convention

Democrats in Washington State will meet in County Conventions on Saturday, April 10th, most starting at 10:00 AM. Each of these conventions will adopt a platform for the County Party, pass resolutions that will go before the Washington State Democratic Convention, and vote on nominees for partisan county offices.
