Winter Farmers' Market
We can still meet again this year!

The farmers' market is an agreement between farmers and the consumers to meet and allow purchase's directly from the producer. As a non-profit our goal at the Boulder County Farmers' Markets are to facilitate and assist in that exchange while maximizing the benefit to both parties.  The demand for fresh local food where the production methods can be verified is increasing and our local farmers are working hard to meet that demand.  One of the requests we hear most often is to extend the farmers' market season.  For this to happen the farmers have to take the risk of growing more, and consumers have to show up to buy it where it is made available.  This year we have two events that work towards a year round farmers' market in Boulder County.  The Cornucopia of Local an all food event the Saturday before Thanksgiving, that is this Saturday at the Boulder Outlook Hotel, and on December 13th we have a Winter Farmers' Market and holiday gift show at the Boulder County Fairgrounds.

See you at the market.

10:00am- Transition Boulder County; Michael Brownlee

THE FUTURE OF FOOD IS LOCAL! As global food prices soar to record levels, food supplies are rapidly diminishing due to water shortages, droughts, soil loss, competition from crops grown for bio-fuel, and humanity's appetite for meat. To be sustaining and sustainable, agriculture must quickly transition from an oil-based industrial model to a more labor-intensive, knowledge-intensive, organic, localized model. This means a radical reduction of fossil fuel inputs, accompanied by an increase in labor inputs and a reduction of transport, with production being devoted primarily to local consumption.

10:30am- Sandy Cruz; leading Permaculturist

The conscious design and maintenance of agriculturally productive ecosystems to create the diversity, stability, and resilience of natural eco-systems. This form of agriculture seeks the harmonious integration of landscape and people providing their food, energy, shelter, and other material and nonmaterial needs in a sustainable way.

1:30pm - Wynn Martens - raising hens in town

Wynn and Ryan Marten, co-founders of Urban Hens, a local partnership dedicated to reintegrating hens into Boulder's backyard, school and community gardens. Urban Hens is funded by the Foundation for Sustainability and Innovation.  Urban Hens will bring chicken coops to community settings, design an effective model for easy backyard hen tending, and provide activities for schools and community organizations that spark children's interest in aiding the environment, raising food for their families and caring for their own hens.  The hens help us think about what we eat, what we throw away, where the rest of our food is coming from, and how a closed-loop system works at the most basic level.  And, backyard chickens can provide a healthy, local food source and bring a not-so-new dimension to homes, schools, and communities seeking sustainability.  The Martens will provide  the bare basics and answer many of the frequently asked questions around starting and keeping a coop of backyard hens - aka slow food machines;  from birth to death, the best eggs, full cycle scraps to manure and back, and stopping predators.

2:00pm- Shanan Olsen - CSA's (community supported agriculture)

Why a CSA (for Community Supported Agriculture) is a solution for you and your community. A CSA is a way for the food buying public to create a relationship with a farm and to receive a weekly basket of produce. By making a financial commitment to a farm, people become "members" (or "shareholders," or "subscribers") of the CSA. Most CSA farmers prefer that members pay for the season up-front, but some farmers will accept weekly or monthly payments. Some CSAs also require that members work a small number of hours on the farm during the growing season. Shanan is part owner of Abbondanza Organic Seeds & Produce.

2:30pm - Myrto Ashe; 100 Mile Diet

This workshop on "eating close to home" is a practical exploration of the feasibility of a local diet given the realities of today.  What are the challenges? What are the benefits? How does one break down the task into manageable pieces? Myrto Ashe is a family physician focusing on food for the past year.  This started as a desire to live in a way that is both healthier and more sustainable, but has evolved into a concern with some of the great issues of today, including climate change, problems with energy availability, and how these relate to the economy as we are presently experiencing it. She writes at www.ecoyear.net.
