Until we meet again

There is a lot that can be said about spending time at a farmers' market.  As part of this job I talk to customers, farmers, prepared and packaged food vendors.  Everyone seems to have a good word to say about being at the farmers' market.  The members of the market really do appreciate the support, not only financially but the good will that is shared by everyone makes being a part of the market one of those intangibles that seems to make all the hard work worth it.

We end our season this week on a high note.  Not only are we due for another beautiful fall day for our outdoor farmers' market, but even in these troubled economic times the Boulder County community has come out to support the local food producers.  Both markets have grown substantially this year, not only in sales but in the number of new farmers we have had join us.  This means we are starting to see the future of farming in Boulder County as a growth opportunity, not in decline as many had feared.  We are attracting new younger farmers with an interest in making a difference in not only in providing the freshest food, but by producing it in truly sustainable methods.  By supporting local food production we have increased our local food security, kept the money spent in the local economy, kept the land around us in ecologically sound production, reduced our carbon footprints, and made the lifestyles of those that are willing to work so hard at farming economically possible. All this while eating the freshest most nutritious food possible.

Corner Market Secrets to Incredible Meals

Book signing and presentation by food author, Carol Ann Kates

This Saturday at Boulder Farmers' Market

On the north end of 13th street (near Canyon) from 11:00-11:30am!

Former grocer and deli-operator, Carol Ann Kates, is daughter of the founder of Steele's Market, an independent family-run grocery chain that served Colorado's Front Range for over 60 years. She learned her most valuable lesson about cooking from her father, a simple grocer--the quality of the ingredients one uses when cooking is as important if not more important than the recipe. In her presentation, Kates will share grocery-insider secrets about selecting only the best, something she believes guarantees more savory meals for you and your family.

In today's tough economic environment, this information is vital, as it helps shoppers select perishable products that will not spoil soon after purchase. Kates will also share grocery-insider wisdom about storing perishable products to help extend their shelf life.

Kates compiled her grocery wisdom along with 300 delicious, customer-tested, family-friendly recipes into award-winning cookbook, Secret Recipes from the Corner Market, selected as one of the top ten favorite cookbooks of the Denver Post Food Staff. She is currently working on her second cookbook which will feature Colorado produced products from Boulder County Farmers' Markets.   Kates will be serving samples of a recipe from her cookbook--White Bean Chicken Chili.

For more information visit her website at: www.cornermarketsecrets.com

You have been reading Carol Ann's recipes all season in this newsletter.  Now you have the opportunity to get her cookbook to continue to enjoy her recipes!

Satisfying the localvore after the Farmers' Market season ends.

By Elisabeth Worthing

I've done more than ever this year to hang onto the growing season. New feats included freezing over 60 lbs of tomatoes from Honey Acre, freezing basil from Steven's Farm, a pantry stocked full with, among other things, beans from Ginger Cat Farms and thanks to the folks at Miller Farm my root cellar (or rather a corner of my basement) is full of potatoes and winter squashes. You can also find stone ground 100% whole wheat flour from Butte Mill and pureed pumpkin in any remaining corner of my freezer. If there was enough room I'd probably order up myself an elk halve from High Wire Ranch.

Still not satisfied I set out to find out where we can all get produce over the next few months. I went stand to stand in both the Longmont and Boulder Markets and I found that most growers will be at the winter markets scheduled for Saturday, November 22 at the Outlook Hotel and Saturday, December 13 at the Boulder County Fairgrounds. Both are great opportunities to support and showcase local growers at your Holiday celebrations. I also found that there's still plenty of time to continue to stock up and I even found a few places where we can get greens all winter. Many of the growers have stands that will remain open through November and even December in come cases.

SOURCES FOR MORE INFORMATION

I was amazed after visiting both markets how many vendors are members of Boulder County Farmers' Markets.  I couldn't possibly list all the contact information here.  If there is a vendor at the markets you would like to contact there are three really good sources.

Localharvest.org has a way to track down farms in any area in the country by zip code it is also a great resource for finding a CSA farm you might want to work with.

The Boulder County Going Local team (now Transition Boulder County) has a local resource guide on line at eatlocalguide.com they have the list of food types on the right you can click and drill down to find.

And of course the Boulder County Farmers' Market can give you contact information on any of their vendors, but their policy requires you ask for the information by name of the farm or farmer. 303-910-2236

The 2008 landgrab for food and financial security

GRAIN is an international non-governmental organisation which promotes the sustainable management and use of agricultural biodiversity based on people's control over genetic resources and local knowledge.

grain.org

Today's food and financial crises have, in tandem, triggered a new global land grab. "Food insecure" governments that rely on imports to feed their people are snapping up farms all over the world to outsource their own food production and escape high market prices. Private investors, hungry for profits in the midst of the deepening financial crisis, are eyeing overseas farms as an important new source of revenue. As a result of both trends, fertile agricultural land is being swiftly privatized and consolidated by foreign companies in some of the world's poorest and hungriest countries. A new report from GRAIN examines 100 cases of agricultural land grabbing -- whether for food or simply for profit -- that have exploded this year.

Saudi Arabia and China are just two nations out buying farms, from Sudan to Cambodia, to satisfy their own food needs. In these cases, governments, sometimes through sovereign wealth funds, are negotiating rights to foreign land -- whether by purchase, concession or lease -- so that their corporations can come in and produce food to export back home. In return, they are offering oil contracts, soft loans, infrastructure projects and development funds. The food-hungry land grabbers include China, India, Japan, Malaysia, Korea, Egypt, Libya, Bahrain, Jordan, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates. Those giving up their land, in exchange for the oil deals or investments, include the Philippines, Mozambique, Thailand, Cambodia, Burma, Laos, Indonesia, Pakistan, Sudan, Uganda, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, Ukraine, Russia, Kazakhstan and Zimbabwe.

Grist asked two gurus from the sustainable farm/food world to weigh in on the role of food in the 2008 election.

Chef Dan Barber and sustainable ag expert Fred Kirschenmann set the table for a new food policy

Grist.org

Sustainable farming is becoming a nationwide trend, says a feature in USA Today that cites numerous examples of how farmers around the country are changing to "greener" practices. A Minnesota greenhouse is heating its facilities with biomass, and growing its own biomass crops to eventually produce its own fuel. Livestock producers on both coasts are rotating grazing animals and using measures to prevent erosion. Rising interest in sustainable farming is driven by growing demand for locally grown, organic, and sustainable products, says the article.

Food Labels

With the season ending for our regularly scheduled Farmers' Markets if we are going to eat we are going to have to do some shopping in those other places that have fresh food.  We will find more labeling than ever before, some of it helpful some very confusing.  Here is some help on what all those stickers and labels on our food mean:
