This Year, Commit to Creativity Art isn't just for watching, it's also for creating. Join in on the fun at Oakland's many options for learning adventures. Piedmont Piano Company offers an array of private and group classes for newcomers or continuing students. The Crucible has even started a program called "Resolve to Create," encouraging everyone to consider creating a new sculpture, ceramics piece or other creative ideas. Aspire to be in the circus? The Kinetic Arts Center offers classes for acrobats, contortion, juggling, and more. For the more adventurous types, try the flying trapeze or Chinese acrobatics at Trapeze Arts. Rock Paper Scissors Collective offers classes on silk screening, knitting, stenciling and more. The Institute of Mosaic Arts brings in artists from around the world to teach special techniques. Arts of the Missions of "New Spain" at OMCA
 Spanish missionaries had made a lasting impression on life in "New Spain", an area that includes the American Southwest and Mexico. Opening in February, a new exhibit at the Oakland Museum of California's explores the cultural influence of the Spanish missions. Titled "Splendors of Faith/Scars of Conquest," the exhibit includes paintings, sculptures, furniture, and other objects from mission churches dating from 1600-1821. The OMCA is the only venue in California for the traveling exhibition, which closes in May 2011. Go to http://museumca.org for more upcoming exhibitions and special events. |

Stay Over in Oakland for Restaurant Week
 January 23-29, Oakland is celebrating its first Restaurant Week when many of Oakland's most celebrated restaurants will offer discounted prixe fix menus for $20, $30 and $40. Participating restaurants are located in Uptown, Old Oakland, Rockridge, Montclair Village, Glenview, Jack London Square and other neighborhoods. It's a great excuse to stay over and enjoy a night-on-the town. Many of the full-service hotels with restaurants are participating, including the Waterfront Hotel, recently renovated Oakland Marriott City Center, the Washington Inn and the The Claremont Hotel Club & Spa. |
