Eat Real 2010
Eat Real Taco
Don't miss the Oakland's biggest food festival Aug 25-27 at Jack London Square. From Sisig (a traditional Filipino meat dish) to paella, you'll find a multitude of new tastes to try. In addition to more than 100 food and drink vendors, this year's Eat Real includes cooking displays, food craft demonstrations and some serious beef butchering. Best of all: admission is free. www.eatrealfest.com
Frozen Favorites
Lush Gelato
Parsnip horseradish sorbet? Strawberry basil gelato? Chefs concocting today's frozen treats draw on seasonal produce for inspiration. Try Lush Gelato on Piedmont Ave which mixes the local with the imported, including mint chip with chocolate from Ethiopia and locally grown fresh mint. Beet sorbet? Don't laugh until you've tried it. Scream Sorbet started at local farmers markets, including Fridays in Old Oakland and Saturdays in Grand Lake but will soon be selling scoops of its exotic flavors from a storefront in Temescal next to Bakesale Betty. Also on Temescal, Tara's Organics serves up Edamame Lemon and Plum Ginger. For more cool dessert ideas, visit www.oaklandcvb.com.
The Flavors of Mexico
Tamarindo
Oakland has several restaurants that present regional specialties of Mexico in casual yet stylish surroundings. In Old Oakland, Tamarindo presents Cochinita Pibil, a Yucatan dish of pork marinated in an achiote adobe sauce. Botana de Pico de Gallo is a refreshing dish of sliced cucumbers and seasonal fruit topped with sea salt, lime and peanut chile. Through an adjacent door is Miel, their new stylish tequila bar which offers special margaritas such as . Other upscale Mexican offerings to try include Dona Tomas on Telegraph in Temescal and Cocina Poblana in Jack London Square. Find more casual and fine dining options at www.oaklandcvb.com.
Ferry Bloody Marys
Bloody Mary
Commuters love the Oakland/San Francisco ferry. Visitors can also enjoy quick transport, a fantastic view and killer cocktails. Bartender Juan Cendejas whips up Caipirinhas with cachaça, a Brazilian rum-like spirit, and fresh lime juice, but he's best known for his spicy Bloody Marys. On private cruises, he even adds bacon for garnish.

Ferry Bloody Mary
  • 4 ounces tomato juice (or Bloody Mary mix)
  • 1 ounce vodka
  • 4 drops Tapatio hot sauce
  • 4 drops Maggy sauce or Worcestershire sauce
  • Celery salt
  • Black pepper
  • Dash of salt
  • Cilantro (fresh)
  • Squeeze of fresh lime juice
  • Horseradish
  • Splash of olive juice for flavor
Mix well with ice. Garnish with celery stalk, a lime wedge and an olive.
