Oakland's California Museum Transformed
Prepare to be amazed. The acclaimed Oakland Museum of California has been completely reimagined. California's landscape, people and fertile creativity are showcased in innovative interdisciplinary, interactive exhibits with high-tech extras. Amidst established favorites such as the works of Arthur and Lucia Mathews, new galleries showcase contemporary works, such as Trevor Paglen's 2008 color photograph of swirling satellites and Hank Willis Thomas' "White Imitates Black." The creativity will continue outside the exhibits with after-hours events, a new cafe and a shop featuring works by local artists and educational toys. The museum will stay open until 8 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, and 9 p.m. on the second Friday of each month. Learn more at www.museumca.org. |
Peralta Historic Hacienda
Peralta Hacienda Historical Park offers programs, exhibits, and educational activities that bring to life the history of the Peralta Hacienda, the East Bay, and California. A local and state landmark listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the 1870 farmhouse represents Spanish-speaking California on the cusp of a new era after the Gold Rush and annexation of California by the United States. The museum is open to the public Thursday through Saturday, 2:30-5:30 p.m. Stop by May 8 for the Back to the Rancho festival which gives everybody a chance to learn history by joining in. There will be dancing, making adobe bricks, lassoing a model longhorn, making drip candles and tortillas from scratch - all while finding out what it was like to live on the Peralta rancho.
