Pizza, Please
Pizza Please
For aficionados, pizza is anything but fast food. With stuffed and thin crust pies, Zachary's has been praised by the Michelin and Zagat guides. Pizzaiolo skips predictable pepperoni in favor of Monterey Bay squid, black trumpet mushrooms and gremolata. Also opened by Chez Panisse alumni Charlie Hallowell, Boot & Shoe Service creates new classics such as rapini and sausage. Gourmet Magazine praised Marzano - now with two Oakland locations - for its creative dinner and brunch pizzas. Best of the Best: Classic Dining
Scotts Shrimp
Scott's Seafood has stood the test of time with a classic menu of delightful fruits of the sea. Prepared with the utmost attention to detail, and served in an exquisite atmosphere, complete with estuary views, each dish has a simple sophistication. Somerset, with its Craftsman-like smolder and woodworked details, specializes in creative American comfort food. New to the Grand Lake scene, Grand Tavern echoes of prohibition era luxury and secretiveness. The gorgeous patio, tucked back away from the street, is the perfect spot to sip on one of the delicious old school cocktails, many made from local Small Hands Food ingredients, and full of organic fruits and small-batch liquors. A short but savvy menu won't disappoint. Try the roasted squash with chili and garlic sour cream sauce. Find more Best of the Best Oakland casual and fine dining options at www.oaklandcvb.com.
Small Thyme's Ultimate Cheesecake
Cheesecake
Ultimate Cheesecake is a decadent, delicious dessert that's been popular since Roman times.  Small Thyme serves it at their cafe and catered events with a lemon blueberry sauce.

Warm Lemon Blueberries Sauce:
  • 1 pint blueberries
  • 1 lemon, zested
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
Sauce Directions:
  • In a small saucepan add all the ingredients and simmer over medium hear for 5 minutes or so until the fruit begins to break down slightly.
  • Leave to cool before spreading on cheesecake.
Crust:
  • 2 cups finely ground graham crackers about 30 squares
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 stick unsalted butter, melted
Crust Directions:
  • Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F.
  • In a mixing bowl, combine the crust ingredients with a fork until evenly moistened.
  • Lightly coat the bottom and sides of an 8- inch pan and, using the bottom of measuring cup or the smooth bottom of a glass, press the crumbs down into the base and 1- inch up the sides.
  • Refrigerate for 5 minutes.
Filling:
  • 1 pound cream cheese, 2 8 oz. blocks, softened
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 pint sour cream
  • 1 lemon, zested
  • 1 dash vanilla extract
Filling Directions:
  • In the bowl of an electric mixer, beat the cream cheese on low speed for 1 minute until smooth and free of any lumps.
  • Add the eggs, 1 at a time, and continue to beat slowly until combined. Gradually add sugar and beat until creamy, for 1 to 2 minutes. Add sour cream, lemon zest, and vanilla. Periodically scrape down sides of the bowl and beaters. The batter should be well mixed but not over- beaten.
  • Pour the filling into the crust- lined pan and smooth the top with a spatula.
Baking Directions:
  • Set the cheesecake pan on a large piece of aluminum foil and fold up the sides around it.
  • Place the cake pan in a large roasting pan. Pour boiling water into the roasting pan until the water is about halfway up the sides of the cheesecake pan the foil will keep the water from seeping into the cheesecake.
  • Bake for 45 minutes. The cheesecake should jiggle it will firm after chilling, so be careful not to overcook. Let cool in pan for 30 minutes.
Final Assembly:
Chill in refrigerator, loosely covered, for at least 4 hours. Loosen the cheesecake from the sides of the pan by running a thin metal spatula around the inside rim. Unmold and transfer to a cake plate. Using a spatula spread a layer warm lemon blueberry topping over the surface.

Slice the cheesecake with a thin, non- serrated knife that has been dipped in hot water. Wipe dry after each cut.
