Just opened in Uptown, Hibiscus specializes in Caribbean Creole cuisine, including a peppery Congo-style soup. In addition to live music its waterfront location, Miss Pearl's Jam House serves up jambalaya and shrimp with grits. Pican has gained acclaimed for its elegant atmosphere and bold tastes of the South. Menu items include Bourbon & Molasses Lacquered Duck, partnered with collard greens spiced with chiles and garlic. Beer Tasting
Think of it as school with a prize. Oakland has a full menu of options for sample drinks and food. Watch artisans at Hodo Soy produce soymilk, tofu and yuba.  Beer Revolution is a new speciality beer bottle shop and tasting bar. Numi's Tea Garden teaches visitors about tea production, packing and tasting.  Watch Miette make cakes through the windows of its production facility. Chop Bar's Jicama Tri-Tip Salad

"It's inviting. It's comfortable. It's got style. Best of all, the food is good, too." The SF Chronicle is just one of the many fans of Chop Bar located inland from Jack London Square. Chef-owners Jesse Branstetter cooked at San Francisco's Ramblas, Farallon and Rubicon; Lev Delany at Bruno's and in catering.

Ancho Vinaigrette
  • Juice of 1 lime & 1 orange
  • Toast & grind 1 ancho chile
  • Add only  a pinch of ancho to citrus w/ a pinch of salt
  • Whisk three parts of olive oil to 1 part of citrus juice
  • Add a finely sliced shallot
Jicama, Watercress and Carrot Salad
  • Cut 1 head of jicama into batons
  • Grate 1 carrot
  • Segment 1 orange
  • Toss ingredients above with 1 bunch of watercress and dress with ancho vinaigrette
Tri-Tip Steak Marinade

Purée 2 cloves of garlic in food processor. Slowly add canola oil until smooth then add 1 oz achiote, remaining toasted ancho (from vinaigrette recipe above), ½ tsp cumin seed, juice of ½ lime & juice of ½ an orange. Rub the tri-tip with the purée and let marinate.

Grill tri-tip to medium rare and slice against the grain. Place it on top of salad. Garnish with toated pumpkin seeds or ancho vinaigrette.

Vietnamese Sandwich
Try Ba Le Vietnamese Sandwich for Bahn Mi, the Vietnamese-style sandwiches that mix thinly sliced meat with carrots, cilantro and pickled vegetables on a French roll. Tucked under one of the many tiled art deco facades in the trendy Uptown district, Fat Cat Cafe has been dishing out delicious bowls of soup and hearty sandwiches to workers and visitors alike for years. Breakfast sandwiches at Kefa Coffee in Jingletown include a fried egg and spinach combo on English muffin, or line-caught Alaskan smoked salmon scrambled wedged inside a perfectly flaky croissant.
