Dear Friends

This summer I committed to resting and reflecting a bit more, enjoying the longer days and the lazy feeling that comes with summer. I created intentional space in my work schedule to have more home and family time. As I opened that space in came the family time, just not in the way I had imagined, it showed up as two family health issues which needed my immediate and full attention. This pulled me, right out of my “metaphorical hammock”. Life deals us surprises all the time and we never know when, sometimes they seem to hit all at once.

As we try to care for our health often times I catch myself or hear my clients say "when this crisis -( fill in the blank) is over” I can get back to taking care of myself. Or once the “stress” in my life calms down I will get back to eating well and working out. What we come to learn and know is life happens on a schedule we cannot control. How we learn to live with the daily stressors and take care of ourselves "in that process" is truly a key to our overall good health and general sense of happiness.

This month our feature article gives us a few helpful tips on dealing with our stress in the day to day. I especially love the "Going to Tahiti" Restorative Pose exercise!

As part of my New 3 Month Group program starting this fall we will learn stress management techniques as part of creating optimal health! Also look for our October 1st workshop , Moving Mindfully Out of Stress.

In addition enjoy the “seasonal” fresh from the market recipes in this issue.

If you or anyone in your life needs some support around making healthy life changes, come and see me for a free health consult. See how one conversation can change your life!

Please forward and share this newsletter with friends and family!

In health!

    Stress-Relievers

Studies now confirm that stress is the biggest underlying factor in the disease process. All of your best health efforts - supplements, foods and exercise are undermined if you are stressed throughout your day. Here are ways to de-stress and to calm your nervous system. Make this an important part of your daily self-care/loving.

    Restorative Pose
The restorative pose is to be done 2X’s/day for 15 min. Lie on your back on the floor with your knees and feet up in on a chair or sofa. The rules of restoration are: no TV, no phone, no chatting, no reading or making of lists of things to do – physically or mentally. It is suggested to not use music – but I would soften the guideline to include a soothing sound if it helps you to more easily relax and get out of your mind chatter.

This position allows your parasympathetic nervous system to come into play – bringing calm and clarity of thinking as well as enhancing digestive function and healing. It is a way to “go to Tahiti” in the midst of your day. Of most benefit is to do it when you feel that you have the least time to do it, when you perceive that have too much to do and are stressed at knowing where to begin. It will restore your balance and give you clarity as to your path as well as the next step to take. You will handle your “to- do” list with much more effectiveness.

Breathing Exercises For Relaxation (thanks to Andrew Weil)
One of the fastest and most effective stress- relievers is the "4-7-8 Breath." Place the tip of your tongue against the bony ridge by your upper front teeth. Breathe in through your nose for 4 counts. Hold your breath for 7 counts. Exhale through your mouth (making a whooshing sound) for 8 counts. Repeat this cycle 4 times, twice a day.

    Practicing Breath Work
In Buddhist and yogic traditions, people claim to have reached an enlightened state by doing nothing more than paying attention to the rising and falling of their breath. What easier way could there be to reach such a state? Especially since breathing - following the ebb and flow of your breath - is an intrinsic part of meditation. By paying attention to your breath, you will rapidly change your state of consciousness, begin to relax, and slowly detach from ordinary awareness (ie the stressor).

    Reducing Stress Naturally
Stress is often a matter of how we frame a situation, rather than the situation itself, and how we react to potential stressors is greatly influenced by our internal reaction to external situations. Although the components that make up stress can be complex, simple steps can help reduce stress. Try avoiding the following common stressors and see how you feel after a week or two.

    • Caffeine and other stimulant drugs. Often these make us more jumpy, anxious and fearful, and interfere with relaxation, rest and sleep.
    • Sound. With a penetrating influence on the nervous system, it is no surprise that some kinds of sound increase our level of arousal and make us tense and anxious.
    • News. News reports can profoundly affect your mental state, increasing anxiety and possibilities for worry.
    • Agitated minds. Being around others who are agitated can easily affect your level of agitation. Whenever possible, stick to interacting with those who are centered and calm.

Food as Medicine and Fun Facts:

What are the benefits of Eating Foods in Season?

We celebrate food that is in season because that is when you get the most flavor and nutritional value and when it is the most affordable. For the greatest freshness look for foods that are locally grown and are in season.

    Green Beans: Health Benefits
We celebrate Green Beans as one of the World's Healthiest Foods while they are in the peak of their season. Green beans are one of only a few varieties of beans that can be eaten fresh. They are picked when they are still immature, and the inner bean is just beginning to form. This is when they are richest in nutrition and flavor.

Nutritional Value Green beans are a concentrated source of vitamin K, providing 122% of the daily value (DV) for this mineral, which is essential for bone mineralization. They also contain 20% DV for vitamin C and 17% DV for vitamin A, which provide powerful antioxidant protection against cellular damage from free radicals. Green beans also contain carotenoid phytonutrients such as beta-carotene, lutein and zeaxanthin, which provide anti-inflammatory properties, function as antioxidants and have been found to be especially important in promoting eye health. And one cup contains only 44 calories!
