    James D. Vaughn Museum

Allison and Brian received a personal tour of the James D. Vaughn Museum in Lawrenceburg, TN. Tom Crews, a distant cousin of Brian's, met them after hours to show them the exhibits and historic memorabilia.

Born in 1864, Mr. Vaughn was a renowned gospel songwriter and publisher. In 1902, he founded the Vaughn Music Company in Lawrenceburg. In 1922, he established radio station WOAN, considered the first radio station licensed in Tennessee. By 1925, Vaughn had sixteen full-time gospel quartets touring the nation.

Brian's family, The Speer Family, traveled for Mr. Vaughn and G.T. "Dad" Speer, Brian's grandfather, worked for the Vaughn Company. In several music school photos, Dad and Mom Speer were teachers and Brock, Rosa Nell, Mary Tom, and Ben were students. If you're ever in Lawrenceburg, be sure to stop by the museum to see the beginnings of Southern Gospel music. The museum is located on the top floor of the Suntrust Bank Building on the square. Tell Tom we said hello!
