We can't prevent disasters from happening in Virginia.
Each year Virginia's communities, your communities, are struck by disasters. Hurricanes, tornadoes, floods... nature can be unpredictable and unforgiving.
Often the catastrophic impact of these disasters exceeds the state's ability to fully respond to the needs of our citizens and our communities.
But we can restore hope to Virginians when they strike.

In April 2011, several severe storms hit Virginia. These storms caused over $25 million worth of damage to homes, businesses and infrastructure. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) denied funds to Virginia to help with recovery. The Commonwealth of Virginia has donated approximately $6 million in state funds, insurance has covered a large portion of those costs, localities and business are pitching in as well. After those considerations, as of August 3, 2011, $2,185,000 in individual requests remains outstanding in the areas affected by the storms.
How can we help?
In May of 2011, Governor Bob McDonnell created the Virginia Disaster Relief Fund to give Virginia citizens a mechanism to help those whose homes were destroyed or damaged in the Spring 2011 tornadoes and to serve as a long-term mechanism for future disasters. The fund is administered by the Virginia Department of Emergency Management, the state agency that is similar in responsibility on the state-level to Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) on the national level. The money is carefully monitored buy a team of technical experts at VDEM, requests are evaluated carefully by local task force and then a state team. Then local service organizations use the money to buy supplies to complete the projects.
