File Intervention Translates to a Seamless, No Hassle Solution at Valdosta State University

Valdosta State University
Sometimes design is part of the in-plant's responsibilities and sometimes not. But for Valdosta State University's in-house print shop in Georgia, a little help with file design is translating into more business and faster turnaround times.

"We do not have the campus design group in our unit," says Print Manager Drew Burgering, "they are separate."  That can slow the production process down if departments send files to design that only need a little tweaking.

Valdosta State UniversityBurgering noticed this often led clients to look off campus for a printer, so he started accepting customer-created files and tweaking them to standards. "I would add in what was missing myself and then get approval from the design group," he explains. How it gets done or who does it is irrelevant to customers.Their only concern is getting the job finished.

The in-plant's file intervention has led to several more jobs staying on campus. This relatively tiny in-plant team comprised of three full-time and one part-time person generated nearly a quarter of a million dollars last year in revenue.

Beth Gatewood Earns Certified Mail Manager Credential

Beth Gatewood
Beth Gatewood, the Assistant Administrator of Printing, Mailing and Document Services at the University of Oklahoma in Norman, has achieved the distinction of Certified Mail Manager (CMM) from the In-Plant Printing and Mailing Association. To attain the CMM credential, candidates must successfully demonstrate a high level of professionalism and mail expertise, as well as pass a comprehensive examination.

Ms. Gatewood, who has been with the University of Oklahoma for over 26 years and overseeing the mail center for the past 11 years, explains why she chose to take the extra step and pursue the CMM credential. "More companies are combining printing and mailing and IPMA's dedication to the mailing industry inspired me to pursue certification. Becoming certified reemphasizes your dedication to your organization and the industry, and adds a level of credibility to your employer, colleagues and clients."

Exams Have Been Updated and New Study Guides Are Available

If you are interested in gaining certification, visit IPMA's Certification website at www.ipma.org. The exams have recently been updated to reflect current issues and trends.  New study guides have also been created to give candidates a better understanding of the information needed to prepare.

Both the CGCM and CMM exams will be given June 24 at IPMA's Educational Conference in Kansas City. (An Exam Preparation Session will be offered on June 23.) You can also arrange to take the exam on-line at a testing center near you. If the exam is taken other than at conference, all additional fees (facility, computer, etc.) will be the responsibility of the candidate.
