 There are at least 4 key ingredients found in intimate relationships.  If a cake did not taste sweet, you would say that is missing the ingredient of sugar. In the same way, you can often taste a relationship and notice that one or more of these key ingredients is missing. 

 

The first ingredient is Affectionate Care Giving, which says "I care about you." When you feel the pain someone else is experiencing and tell them "I feel so sad for what you are going through," you are demonstrating the ingredient of Affectionate Care Giving. 

 

The second ingredient is Vulnerable Communication which says "I trust you." When someone opens themselves up, admits a need, and asks for help; they are vulnerably communicating a need. 

 

The third ingredient is Joint Accomplishment which in effect says "I need you." Many couples sense Joint Accomplishment when they have their first child and think "look what we did." Others feel it when they buy or decorate their first home. It is that sense of accomplishment that comes from jointly achieving something. 

 

The fourth ingredient is Mutual Giving which says in effect "I love you." This is the ingredient we all desire; where no one is taking to get their needs met but two people are freely giving to meet the needs of the other person.
