A select nationwide group of scholars gathered at the USC School of Social Work to participate in an intensive 10-day summer training institute focused on issues surrounding substance abuse among Hispanic populations. The Interdisciplinary Research Training Institute on Hispanic Drug Abuse, led by professors Avelardo Valdez, Alice Cepeda and Charles Kaplan, was sponsored by the National Institute on Drug Abuse and is designed to support and advance the careers of graduate students and new investigators interested in pursuing substance abuse research. NEWS
To better understand military culture and how it impacts servicemembers and their families, Master of Social Work students embarked on a two-week summer trip to Germany, where the U.S. military has a large presence. The course offered insight into the experiences, life stressors, values and concerns of military-impacted populations and how best to treat them. Read more

The School of Social Work partnered with the Social Work Policy Institute of the National Association of Social Workers Foundation and the PolicyLab of The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia to issue a new report highlighting critical reforms needed to improve the health of children involved in the child welfare system. Professor Janet Schneiderman served as academic chair of the symposium. Read more

A new $1 million, three-year grant from First 5 LA will enable the Ostrow School of Dentistry of USC and the School of Social Work to provide underprivileged children with oral health care and help them see a dentist regularly. Social work students will provide follow-up assistance to families, helping them understand and access dental care benefits. Read more
