This year's "Do I Look Illegal?" All School Day celebrated  diversity while confronting the realities of social policies that have  affected many of the clients social workers serve. The annual event began in 1992 after racial tensions sparked the Los Angeles riots, and each  year since, the school has brought people together to raise awareness  about diversity and matters of human conflict. Read more

Henry Cisneros, former secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, said during the 2012 Edward R. Roybal Memorial Lecture that the United States needs to create homes and communities to support its growing older adult population. The annual event honors Roybal, a champion of health and aging services for vulnerable populations. Read more

Avelardo Valdez, Charles Kaplan and Alice Cepeda from the University of Houston bring a wealth of expertise in the social and public health consequences of drug use and violence among high-risk populations. They are joined by Emily Putnam-Hornstein, who gained recognition for her work on child maltreatment at UC Berkeley. Read more

For teens without a home, paying the monthly subscription to a data plan for their smart phone is just as important as eating or a drug habit, according to Eric Rice, whose study was published in the December issue of the Journal of Urban Health. "Cell phones have changed what it means to be a homeless teen as these youth can look for help beyond the streets," Rice said. Read more
