The nation's first entirely web-based Master of Social Work program has reached a milestone in a little over a year, expanding to 47 states and enrolling nearly 1,000 students. The MSW@USC, offered through the school's Virtual Academic Center, allows students to pursue their degree from their home community using "Skype-like" technology that takes advantage of advancements in social networks. Doctoral students Min-Kyoung Rhee, Erica Lizano, Cindy Hsiao and Ahraemi Kim, led by professor Michalle Mor Barak, conducted a study that sought to address challenges in workplace management, cross-cultural miscommunication and productivity at a garment factory between Mexican workers and Korean managers. Older Mexican-Americans living in ethnically dense Mexican-American neighborhoods have lower risk for increased frailty than those who live in more ethnically heterogeneous areas, according to a new USC study by Maria Aranda. By living in communities with others from similar cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds, these older people may be benefiting from informal exchanges of information. Read more
