Experience

I've learned to let God be the lead in the dance of life, to have grace and tolerance for everything and everyone

*  *  *

I don't need God as my co-pilot, I need Him as my pilot.  I need to move over and take the co-pilot seat.

*  *  *

With the help of this program, I've learned to be a winner, not a whiner.

*  *  *

 Learning to meet my needs with the help of my HP is not the same as meeting my "neediness."

wisdom

That which we resist, persists

*  *  *

Often, my HP speaks to me through music, specifically the lyrics of the rock-n-roll I usually listen to.  I was driving to the meeting where I was to chair on Step Seven and I heard, "I'm a young soul in this very strange world and I'm trying to learn about give-and-take.....and I've made every possible mistake."  It occurred to me that making mistakes is how we humans learn.  In Step Seven we are humble, acknowledging that we are human, that we make mistakes.  We are not humiliated, but grounded and in right relationship with our Higher Power. A woman goes to the doctor, worried about her husbands temper and threatening manner
The Doctor asks: "What's the problem?

The woman says: "Doctor, I don't know what to do. Every time my husband comes home drunk, he threatens to slap me around."

The Doctor says: "I have a real good cure for that. When your husband comes home drunk, just take a glass of water and start swishing it in your mouth. Just swish and swish but don't swallow it until he goes to bed and
is asleep."

Two weeks later the woman comes back to the doctor looking fresh and reborn.

The woman says: "Doctor that was a brilliant idea!

Every time my husband came home drunk, I swished with water. I swished and swished, and he didn't touch me! How does the water do that?"

The Doctor says: "The water does nothing at all. It's keeping your mouth shut that does the trick."

Questions from Individuals Seeking Recovery

Dear Al-Anon or Alateen Member,

Welcome to the District 14 Al-Anon/Alateen Monthly Newsletter.  This newsletter is created and distributed by Al-Anon members.  Any member of Al-Anon or Alateen is welcome to contribute to this newsletter.

Recovery In Our Own Words
first steps to recovery

From Our Newsletter Co-Editor:

As promised, here are more members sharing their stories about
how they got to their first meeting and what were they expecting when they started.   I'd love to hear how you got to Al-Anon and your expectations at the start.  Send them to me at district14newsletter@yahoo.com  Linda W

A share from Gene:

When my wife went to the tank in Oakland they told me I was sick too.  That was news to me and I started hearing new words like "codependency" and "detatch".  It seemed to me she was the cause of our problems and I was the victim.  A good friend and member of AA took me to an Al-Anon meeting.  I expected to get advice on how to deal with my wife.  What I got instead was the first lessons in learning how to take care of myself and how to detach from what others shared. Today I say to newcomers, stay a while and you will change your life.  It has changed  mine and I am much, much happier.

A share from Leslie:

I went to my first meeting while our qualifier was in a wilderness program for young adults.  The wilderness program constantly pushed parents to attend Al-Anon or other appropriate support groups.   They prepared us for our first meeting by telling us that we needed to be prepared to be out of our comfort zone at our first couple of meetings, to attend a minimum of a 3 different Al-Anon meetings, and to keep going.  When I went to my first meeting, I was nervous and guarded and cried.  To my surprise, my qualifier was excited and pleased that I was going to Al-Anon.  She felt it was supportive and indicated to her that I was willing to work on myself while she was working on herself.  I continue to go for two reasons.  Reason one is for myself and the value I get from the topics and the emotional support.  Reason two is that my qualifier goes to AA/NA daily so I feel that I can continue to show my support by attending once a week.

  • Al-Anon's newest book Many Voices, One Journey is available at out literature depot and costs $16.00.   It tells the story of the growth of the fellowship and recovery among its members over the past 60 years.  How Al-Anon Works is available in paperback for $5.00.

  • Did you know that there are 15760 Al-Anon meetings in the U.S. and Canada?  That Al-Anon meetings for adults who are children of alcoholics are called "Adult Children" meetings in our schedules (A.C.A. meetings are part of a different fellowship)?  That event flyers that include Alateen participation must be approved using the Alateen Safety Guidelines?
  • New meeting schedules will be available in September

Patrick B., Chair of NCWSA encourages GRs to attend the Area Assembly in October

Patrick shared how he began his service.  He got "roped in" to being his district's newsletter editor, feeling he needed to do his share and flattered to be asked. Then he was asked to step into the vacated Treasurer position.  He hesitated because there were financial conflicts in his district but again accepted the opportunity to help.  Then he went on to the Alternate DR position and quickly found himself in the DR position when it was vacated.  When an opportunity arose, he found himself feeling ready to take on the next challenge.

As Chair of our Northern California World Service Area, he learned how to listen, not react, to encourage discussion, and to find resolutions.  He guarantees that "you'll grow" by attending the Fall Assembly.  We will be electing 11 Area Coordinators (Alateen, Archives, Bylaws, Diversity, Facilities, Group Records, Institutions, Literature, Public Information, and 12 Stepper Editor) and their Alternates as well our new Area Delegate to World Service and our Area officers (Chair, Secretary, Treasurer, Alternate Delegate, and Alateen Process Person).  Patrick plans to stand for the Delegate position.

Our own District positions are also up for election in October and include District Rep and Alternate (only positions where you must have served as a GR prior), Treasurer, Secretary, and coordinators for Literature Depot, Hospitals & Institutions, Newsletter, Lending Library, Public Outreach, Meeting List, Speaker Meeting, Alateen Safety, Alateen, Telephone Hotline, Spanish Liaison, Website, Day-in-Al-Anon.  (There are a few additional guidelines for Alateen positions.)

Current coordinators are asked to update their job descriptions.  You can also email a brief answer to the  questions below to district14newsletter@yahoo.com, so that it can be published in the August and September newsletters.   It's a good way to encourage others to take your place.  You also are being asked to share your responses at our August and September Speaker Meetings.  Call Yvonne de G with any questions at (925) 705-1905.

  1. What moved you to take your position?
  2. What is your proudest accomplishment in the position?
  3. What would you do differently?
  4. Where do you go from here?

Institutions Corner
Pass it on

From Yvonne de G on serving in institutions:

Last month Yvonne shared part of her story about doing Al-Anon service in institutions.  She will continue that story in the next edition.

In the meantime, please remember to pass the Pink Can around at meetings and pass that collection on to the district treasurer earmarked for Institutions.  Now that we have How Al-Anon Works in paperback, it can now be purchased with those funds and taken into the prisons.

From Planting a Seed Pamphlet

Although now out of publication, this was a wonderful little pamphlet introducing Al-Anon members to service in Institutions.  Here are some quotes from the Members Share section:

"When you ask yourself, 'What's a nice girl like me doing in a place like this?', remember that inside those gates lies a captive audience who will soak up your words and feelings like a sponge, and you will be hooked on Institutions Service just as I am."

"When I went through the prison door, my immediate thought was, 'They look just like my sons!'"

For further information on the inmate correspondence service, please contact:

Check it out, chair a meeting, carry the message, and perhaps discover a passion for this service!!!

Alateen Sponsors needed:

Two more schools in our area have invited us to establish Alateen meetings for their students.  We are currently in four schools and this would bring the total to six.  BUT...we need Alateen sponsors in order for this to happen.  Let's not let our children down.  They also suffer from the effects of the family disease of alcoholism.

In addition Marilyn reports that our Alateen group at Juvenile Hall is thriving but an Alternate Sponsor is needed or an additional Sponsor so that a second meeting can be set up.

To become an Alateen sponsor in District 14, contact Marilyn G at 925-759-1452.

 My son's alcoholism affects my granddaughter--who needs my love and support

I joined Al-Anon because of my husband's behavior when he was drinking-and he drank daily. My kids were little at the time. I heard people in meetings talk about their children's addictions, and I thought it was bad enough dealing with a spouse. I could not imagine coping with one of my kids being addicted as well.

I let go and my husband's temper cooled off

My husband moved back into our home following an 18-month separation. We are slowly mending our marriage.

For the most part, we attend our respective meetings and socialize with our respective friends, but we do very little together. I have refused to travel with my alcoholic husband because I was not able to tolerate his abusive language.
