Greetings!
February is a month of holidays: Groundhog Day, Valentine's Day, President's Day, Fat Tuesday, Ash Wednesday and even Leap Day! These generally help us stay distracted while we endure the ups and downs of winter. We have enjoyed a mild season so far, although there is plenty of time left for Old Man Winter to appear. As I write this our daffodils are four inches above the ground and it won't be long until the crocuses appear. The days are already getting longer so spring can't be far behind!
     Happy February!

The Age-Old Question
There is a question which has puzzled mankind since the beginning of time. No, not "which came first, the chicken or the egg", but "brush first or floss first?" Now, thanks to the American Dental Association, we need wonder no more. The answer is floss first.
Flossing first removes plaque and food particles, clearing the way for the fluoride in toothpaste to be carried into the spaces between the teeth. However, if you are hard-boiled and insist on brushing first, there is no need to scramble your routine. As long as you are doing both daily you are Grade-A!
Some people have a problem manipulating the floss between their teeth so floss holders are recommended to do the job. Also, some people fare better with waxed floss for tight teeth and SuperFloss for large spaces. Find the best floss for your teeth so you don't have to "pullet!"

White House
The Road to the White House
With the large amounts of money spent to conduct a presidential campaign, it's easy to imagine that one must be "born with a silver spoon in his mouth"  to be elected president. However, the facts prove differently. Consider:*
Richard Nixon was born in the home his father built. He won an award from Harvard his senior year of high school. However, his family was unable to afford his leaving home for college. He instead attended Whittier College.

Ge rald Ford was born as Leslie Lynch King Jr. His mother left her abusive husband and took her son to live with her parents. She met Gerald R. Ford, whom she married and gave her child his name, Gerald Rudolph Ford Jr. He was the only president to be adopted. Ford worked in his stepfather's paint and varnish store growing up.

Jimmy Carter was the first member of his family ever to go to college. His father was a peanut farmer.

Ronald Reagan was the son of an alcoholic traveling shoe salesman. He worked his way into show business by broadcasting baseball games. At the age of 40, he was divorced and his career was at a dead end.

Bill Clinton was born William Jefferson Blythe IV. His father, a traveling salesman, died in an automobile accident three months before he was born. His mother married Roger Clinton and Bill took that name. Clinton grew up in a turbulent family. His stepfather was a gambler and alcoholic who regularly abused his wife, and sometimes Clinton's half brother, Roger.

These men overcame great odds to become leaders of the free world. You don't have to be the richest person, have a degree from the best schools, or come from the most prominent family. But you must have the grit and determination to see beyond your current circumstances and never give up!

Give Teeth a Chance
John Lennon
Last November, Omega Auction House in  England sold John Lennon's tooth to the highest bidder. It seems that the former Beatle had a tooth extracted in the late 1960's and gifted it to his housekeeper's daughter. She kept it for over 40 years and took it with her as she moved to Canada. The tooth was bought by a Canadian dentist who will display it in his office as well as schools and special events.
Photos of the tooth are circulating on the internet, but I will spare you the visual. It appears the former Fab Four leader was lax in his dental hygiene as the tooth has a very large cavity and is covered with tartar. The dentist plunked down over $31,000 dollars to secure the tooth and will add it to his eclectic collection which includes the skull of a saber-toothed tiger.
