Bowline on a Bight Uses: The Bowline on a Bight makes a secure loop in the middle of a piece of rope. It does not slip or bind. It is satisfying to start with a plain length of rope and finish with a secure safe loop in its middle. Tying it: It should be easy to tie but because it is initially hard to visualize it can be confusing. Several Applications: - Foothold: It can be used to make a secure foothold in the middle of a piece of rope.
- Bosun's Chair: Because two loops are created it has been claimed that it makes an emergency bosun's chair which is more comfortable than a single loop. One loop can go round each thigh with the free tail going round the chest for security. Alternatively, one loop would go round the chest and one round the thighs. However, unless the rope was a couple of inches or more in diameter it would require a demanding emergency to make one really appreciate the "comfort" of either of these bosun's chairs.
- Emergency Purchase: A Bowline on a Bight can also be used to gain some additional purchase: create a Bowline on a Bight in the rope; pass the free end of the rope round a post, then back through the loops and finally to the post again. This gives a three to one purchase - admittedly with some friction.

Just a couple of hours a month . . .
WORSA is a volunteer organization, currently run by a very few for the benefit of all -- in short -- we need volunteers! As of this writing we are short three board members. If only one of the current four board members does not attend a board meeting we do not have a quorum and are unable to finalize any of the decisions required to keep WORSA operating as a non-profit corporation. We are currently looking for a Treasurer, Director and Membership Chair, plus various non-voting positions. Do you have two hours a month to volunteer? During 2012 we expect to have six to eight board meetings -- not one every month.
Treasurer --no experience necessary. If you can balance your checkbook you can be WORSA's treasurer. Last year's treasurer is still active in WORSA and available to answer any and all questions. WORSA uses Quicken and use of the WORSA laptop is available if needed.
Director-- a) Be assigned specific tasks or committee responsibility by the Board; b) Substitute for absent officers as directed by the Commodore. Easy!! Not even any specific assigned tasks except attend the board meetings and be available to vote as needed.
Membership Chair-- a) Work with Secretary to develop Welcome Packet and mail out as needed; b) Mail out membership applications as requested; c) Be responsible for membership sign-in desk at general meetings; d) Provide for guest sign-in and follow-up membership applications. In WORSA Membership Chair is a voting position, so attendance at Board meetings is required. If you have just a couple of hours a month to give to WORSA, please contact Regina Stewart. |
