Another Successful
Sail for the Visually Impaired
|

Every year excitement and anticipation mount and finally the morning arrives - the day of The Sail for the Visually Impaired (SVI) is here! Both guests and volunteers look forward to the annual event that is held at the American Legion Yacht Club (ALYC) every October.
Months of planning and preparation take place as ALYC, WORSA and other volunteers come together to provide a day sail for visually impaired guests. WORSA members were on-hand again this year to greet and check in guest, serve meals, assist guest with any needs and guide them safely on and off the boats.
Also, again this year an enthusiastic group of young volunteers were on hand to treat the guide dogs to an afternoon of play and leisure, and loving care. Forty five boat owners and skippers volunteer boats, time and crew. Guests and their escorts were taken out of Newport Harbor for a fun afternoon of sailing. The weather obliged the sailors with a warm and sunny afternoon, good seas and light winds provided near perfect conditions for this year's event.
Jim Treydte, skipper of Sugarlips, took out four guests for the afternoon. Three of the SVI sailors volunteered to take turns helming the 39 Santana. Jim commented that each of the three new skippers kept Sugarlips on a straight course and all did an excellent job with little verbal guidance.

On another boat, the afternon sparked a little romance. While out sailing, one young mand got down on bended knee and proposed to his girlfriend. She said YES!Y A wonderful moment that truly exemplifies the overall emotion of this annual event.
Every year the guests' excitement for this annual event is contagious. For everyone who brings their boat and all who volunteer on land this is truly a rewarding day and when it is over and all the work is done guests, escorts and volunteers alike begin to look forward to next year's Sail for the Visually Impaired.
