2011 WORSA Roster

The 2011 Roster will be published shortly.  Watch for it in your mailbox.

Nauti Knots

Round Turn and Two Half Hitches

Pass the end around the post twice. This takes the strain while you tie the knot. Go around the standing end to make the first half hitch. Pull this tight. Continue around in the same direction to make the second half hitch. Pull tight to complete the knot.

A Round Turn and Two (or more) Half Hitches is useful for attaching a mooring line to a dock post or ring, although probably less secure than an anchor hitch.

As the name suggests, the Round Turn and Two Half Hitches is composed of two important parts:

Round Turn: The initial round turn - actually two passes of the tail - should take the initial strain while you complete the knot.  This may be critical when handling a mooring line.  An additional turn, or even two additional turns, should be added initially if you are handling a heavy load, e.g. with a large vessel or in a strong wind.  These turns allow you to control the load while you add the two (or more half hitches.

The two half hitches actually form a clove hitch round the standing end.  However, it is common to see an additional one (or more) half hitches - either to make the knot more secure or to use up excess line.

Tying the knot: : Learn to tie the half hitches with one hand.  This allows you to use the other hand to take the strain of a vessel which may easily pull with a force far greater than you could otherwise control.  As emphasized above, when dealing with such force, use as many turns on the post as are necessary to control the strain.

Direction: Always tie the half hitches in the same direction.  If you start the first half hitch with the tail passing away from you above the rope, then do the same with the next (and the next).

Variation Using a Bight: When there is a long tail, the half hitches can be tied using a bight (loop) instead of the end.  This uses up excess rope which may otherwise hang in the way or require coiling..

Say What?
"TINS"

You mustn't be offended because I pulled this one straight from the the sailing alminac, "The Mariner's Book of Days'.

A Sea Story, AKA Yarn - A Definition.  An anacdote, tale, or epic poem that generally takes liberties with the truth.  Unlike the shoreside fairy tale that begins, "Once upon a time," the sea story usually preceded by an attempt to establish believability with the acronym "TINS" ("This is no shit").
Moorings All Taken?
No Worries!
Local author, Cap'n Marc Hughston has made it easy for us SoCal sailors to enjoy Catalina any time of the year . . . even during those crowded summer months when moorings are not so easy to come by.

If you were not able to attend our Duffy Rally this year, plan on scheduling it for next year as all who did attended earlier this month had a wonderful time.  Thank you, Regina, for putting the course together.  Another successful WORSA event!  We divvied up crew based on who wanted to drive, who had GPS's, who knew how to use them, who had wine, and knew how to use it!  It was a tie and everyone enjoyed themselves.

Summer is fully upon us, and everyone is busy racing, which is a wonderful thing.  This year, BCYC had their first All Woman Trophy for the Around the Island Regatta.  It is a beautiful piece of hardware, quite something special.  We had members on two boats, Sol Mate and Campbell's Sloop.  Sol Mate had several WORSA members, in fact.  They also had foreign dignitaries from Italy and Seattle, Washington, and won afore mentioned trophy.   Campbell's Sloop also sported several young members from Orange Coast College.

Our Challenged America Charity Regatta Quilt has been making its rounds along the coast this month.  She's looking yare and making waves.   Buy your tickets now and you could be the next lucky winner to sport a WORSA quilt to display on your Captain's berth.

The actual Charity Regatta is fast approaching, August 20th!  Rent a boat from Aventura or convince a friend to enter their boat.  It's a short informal race for an excellent cause and a good opportunity to try your hand at racing.

Another opportunity to get your boat out in a social event is our up-coming Dana Point Raft up.  Get your sterns out there if you've got a boat, and if not, let us know and we'll do our best to get you on a boat we know is participating.  Remember, the more the merrier.

Sail safe and enjoy the California summer.

Fair Winds,

Raft Up with WORSA!

July 16 & 17

DWYC Raft Up

Hang out with your friends and meet some new ones at the WORSA Raft-Up in Dana Point!

We'll be gathering as many boats as possible so that we can all hang out in the Dana Point anchorage together for the weekend of July 16-17.  The Raft-Up will start forming at 2:00 PM on Saturday, and will disperse by noon on Sunday.

If you know someone with a boat, schmooze them into signing it up to participate.  If you don't know someone with a boat, drop us a note and we'll try to find a boat for you to join.

Details are still in the planning stages, but we'll eat either Saturday dinner or Sunday breakfast at one of the local yacht clubs.

Plan to bring your kayak or dinghy, also games, music, food and/or drinks to share.  It will be an opportunity to commune with your fellow club members and make some new friends.

Email your reservation with or without boat.  (We can't guarantee we can find you a boat for the night, but we'll try!)

Reservations required!

To make a reservation please email to: worsamail@gmail.com

THE QUILT IS HERE!  THE QUILT IS HERE!

Master Quilter, Maggie Bell, and her team of helpers have done it again!  This year's quilt is another masterpiece, and you're going to want to buy a TON of raffle tickets to boost your chances at winning the drawing.

The proceeds will benefit Challenged America, and the drawing will be held after the Disabled Sailors Regatta on August 20th.

Contact any WORSA board member to buy tickets for yourself, and also to sell at your own events and gatherings.  It's a worthwhile cause and everyone can contribute.

1 Ticket = $5.00

5 Tickets = $20.00

15 Tickets = $40.00

The Bowers Museum: Scrimshaw Exhibit

Currently on display at the Bowers in Santa Ana is a fascinating new exhibit, called Scrimshaw: The Art and Craft of the American Whaler. This exhibit explores the bygone era of American whaling, when men were led on distant voyages in search of the giants of the sea.

Consider making a trip to the Bowers this summer, because of our common vested interest in sea-faring activities and the great historical background it provides of our early nation at sea.  You will be amazed at the intricate and beautiful carvings in this exhibit.

For additional information about this fascinating exhibit, call Gentry Brown at (714) 567-3654 or email at publicrelations@bowers.org.

Cruising Corner . . . by KC Matlock

As you sit comfortably at your computer, browsing email, eating bon-bons, and reading this WORSA newsletter, I will be out on Mother Ocean, cruising to Catalina for a few relaxing days on the island . . . gulp! . . . alone! . . . gulp!

As departure hour nears for my first ever single-handed solo trip, I'm running through my preparation list one more time.

OK . . .  I'm ready.  Flip over the sign at my front door to read: Gone Cruising

This bon voyage would not be complete without a shout-out to my sailing gurus, who have both prepared me, as well as inspired me - for this milestone cruise and other life journeys - whether they realize it or not.  Thanks to Captains Susie, Marc, Annette, Mark and Holly.  Also, to Roger who helped me make sure Gypsea is in tip-top shape, and comfy in every way.  And lastly, my gratitude for the extraordinary friendship of Father B. and Harley & Handy (you know who you are) who will know exactly where I am over every nautical mile . . . just in case.

I'll see you when I return, but for now, I've gone cruising.
