Growing Honest Food
Friday, October 12, 2012
6.30pm-8.30pm at the Italian Institute of Culture, Melbourne
"Growing Honest Food" published by Hyland House, celebrates the life and the achievements of the Siciliano family, whose passion and hard work have transformed a barren block of land into a bit of Varapodio, the village in Calabria where they were born. They have created their own small paradise where they live in touch with nature, where memories, family's and regional traditions are still part of their lives. That is why for many people growing your own food has become more important again.

Alda Giuseppina Angela Merini was born in Milan on 21 March 1931. She wrote poetry since she was very young and continued to write it despite her mental illness. She was proposed for the Nobel prize in 1996.
"When I began this project I knew little about Alda Merini. My wish was to pay homage to an important artist who had passed away". Now, after spending two years in her company, I realise that I will miss the daily contact with this superb poet. She has been such an original and entertaining travel companion and I am grateful that she shared some of my journey." (Patrizia Burley).

October 25 official opening at 6.30pm-8.30pm Italian Institute of Culture, Melbourne
The Pilgrims' Way to Santiago, the First European Cultural Itinerary, is one of the greatest treasures shared by all Europeans. Part of the cultural and moral heritage not only of the West but of the whole of mankind, this ancient route has been followed by millions of people from the Middle Ages until the present day.
The photographic exhibition Memories of a Pilgrimage reflects the recent journey made by photographer Manuel Valcárcel and musician Alejandro González, along a pilgrimage route that boasts a long-standing history buried deep in the roots of tradition. This exhibition at the Italian Institute of Culture shows the photos taken in Slovenia and in Italy.

In this absorbing book, Vincent Moleta traces the story of his grandparents' childhood on Stromboli at the end of the 19th century; of Bartolo's year as a cabin boy on a steam trawler out of Napier; of his two years driving fish through the night from Makara Beach to market; of the company set up by Bartolo and his brother Giuseppe, which came to dominate the fish trade in the central North Island. We learn of the serious family rupture in 1930 that saw Bartolo sell up and move to Wellington, settling in Island Bay and establishing, in the teeth of the Depression, Barnao's Fish Market in Lambton Quay, which became an institution.
Vincent Moleta paints a lively picture of life in Island Bay, New Zealand's 'Little Italy', from 1900 to the 1960s: of the Catholic tennis club socials and the Fascist club meetings of the 1930s; of Italian weddings; of the visit of the Italian grand opera company in 1949.
Free admittance.
