In Immemory of Carmelo Bene - Talks and a screening, ten years after his death 5.00pm on Saturday, April 28, 2012 at the IIC, Melbourne
Carmelo Bene was a unique voice that resonated through Italian and European theatre, film and literature over a 43 year-long career. A brilliant artist, a fine mind and a controversial enfant terrible until the end, he managed to achieve great mainstage success without ever bowing to mediocrity, complacency or pandering to the audience taste.
Through his singular approach to re-writing, acting and directing, Bene aimed at bringing about a permanent Copernican revolution on stage and screen - a relentless critique and parody of the subject, language and meaning, culture, art, love, sex and just about every institution of the Western world. His 'impossible research' often went by way of extensively reworking (or outright exploding) classics such as Shakespeare, Wilde or Marlowe's, or giving a new voice to authors the likes of Dante, Leopardi, Campana, Majakovskij, Esenin or Laforgue....(click here to read more) Free Admission

RENAISSANCE
Raphael - Botticelli - Bellini - Titian 15th and 16th Century Italian Paintings from the Accademia Carrara, Bergamo
Until Monday, April 09, 2012 at National Gallery of Australia
(Parkes Place, Parkes, Canberra)
This unique exhibition offers audiences an unparalleled chance to see Early and High Renaissance paintings by some of the greatest European artists. Raphael, Botticelli, Bellini and Titian are represented among an amazing gamut of talent and creative splendour. More than 70 works on canvas and panel will be on display, made between 1400 and 1600 by painters in northern and central Italy.
Of extraordinary quality, the paintings come from Venice, Florence, Padua, Ferrara, Bergamo and Siena. Subjects range from touching depictions of the Madonna and Child, the lives of the Saints and moving renditions of the Crucifixion to insightful portraits of nobles. The genius of Raphael and Titian is known to all, but lesser known painters such as Tura, Crivelli, Lotto, Carpaccio, Perugino and Moroni will also announce their prodigious talents.

Bell'Italia - Italy and the Italian 'Tricolore' in Paolo Simonazzi's photos
Untill Wednesday, April 11, 2012 at Museo Italiano Melbourne (Co. As.It) and from Monday, April 23 onwards at the IIC Melbourne
The photographic exhibition Bell'Italia is part of the celebrations for the 150th anniversary of the Italian Unification and comprises photos taken by Paolo Simonazzi over the last decade throughout the whole Italian peninsula. Leitmotiv of the exhibition are the Italian flag and its three colours: red, white and green.
In Simonazzi's photos the Italian flag and its colours are intersected with photos depicting a daily, at times banal reality: a little town square, a family reunion, the inside of a house, the Italian countryside characterised as it is by a strong human presence. Immediately after, however, the eye runs over the picture to find out where the Tricolore lies and ends up discovering it in the colours of murals, umbrellas, on a wall, a plant and a brush, in an little red van parked in front of a half green, half white wall, in the clothes of the people that are seated at the tables covered with green table cloths, in a vase of flowers, in a shrine and so forth. Finally, other photos depict the flags themselves, waving every now and then, but more frequently just hanging from their flagpoles. These flags appear everywhere, in towns and on the beaches, before the presidential palace and on the balcony of a provincial house, becoming in Simonazzi's photos the truly unifying motif of the countryside(....click here to read more)

A Venice of the Mind - Lisa Barmby exhibition
Until Friday April 13, 2012 at the IIC
For a number of years Venice has been at the heart of Lisa's work as an artist. From her first visit she fell in love with the city, and there are many interlocking reasons. Firstly there is the gondola, a paradoxical private place on public display. She is also interested in the historical Venice - the theatrical daily life, solemn ceremonies, costumes, courtesans, fascination with exotic animals, excesses and oddities. Furthermore there are the masks, worn daily during the 18th century, no doubt as a form of secrecy but also as an intriguing social equalizer. Finally there are the Venetian courtesans, some of them radical figures of their time with a freedom socially, creatively, sexually and financially that is almost contemporary....(Click here for further information)
Free Admission
Opening Hours: Monday to Thursday: 9.00am-1.00pm and 2.00pm -6.00pm, Friday: 9.00am-1.00pm
