Secrets of Venice
7.00pm on Saturday, February 25 and 5.00pm on Sunday, February 26, 2012 at Melbourne Recital Centre
During the 18th century in 'the most beautiful city built by man', the famous orphanage Ospedale Dell Pieta was home to concerts veiled in secrecy and draped in the sublime beauty of the baroque. Here, abandoned young girls became elite musicians, and would perform behind screens, completely hidden from view. The music was written by their violin master and one of the greatest baroque composers, Antonio Vivaldi. This was an experience that had locals, tourists and royalty spellbound.
In 2012, the Brandenburg, together with renowned Italian period violinist and guest director Federico Guglielmo, will reveal a collection of Venice Secrets dedicated to this enigmatic violin virtuoso. Experience seven concertos painted in the colours of Vivaldi's Venice - a floating labyrinth of sumptuous period instrument sounds, from the enchanting to the exhilarating. Discover the thrilling virtuosity of Vivaldi as his stratospheric passages are brought to life by a modern day master of the Italian baroque. An exquisite tribute to the secret beauty behind Vivaldi's more hidden works.
Players
Federico Guglielmo (Italy) guest director and period violin with the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra
Artistic Director
Paul Dyer
Ticket: $36.00 - $135.00.

A Venice of the Mind - Lisa Barmby exhibition on the occasion of the visit of writer Andrea di Robilant
6.00pm on Tuesday, February 28, 2012 at the IIC
For a number of years Venice has been at the heart of Lisa's work as an artist. From her first visit she fell in love with the city, and there are many interlocking reasons. Firstly there is the gondola, a paradoxical private place on public display. She is also interested in the historical Venice - the theatrical daily life, solemn ceremonies, costumes, courtesans, fascination with exotic animals, excesses and oddities. Furthermore there are the masks, worn daily during the 18th century, no doubt as a form of secrecy but also as an intriguing social equalizer. Finally there are the Venetian courtesans, some of them radical figures of their time with a freedom socially, creatively, sexually and financially that is almost contemporary....(Click here for further information)

Venetian Navigators (Irresistible North) by Andrea di Robilant
7.30pm on Thursday, March 01, 2012 at the IIC
Irresistible North is an extraordinary story inspired by the accounts on the voyage of two Venetian brothers, Nicolo' and Antonio Zen, and their route from the Faroes Island to Shetland, Iceland, Greenland, and perhaps the coast of North America searching for cod. While working in the Biblioteca Marciana in Venice, Andrea di Robilant came across a curious map of the North Atlantic published in 1558 and its travel narrative in the form of letters describing the fourteenth century journey of the two Venetian merchants and navigators. Di Robilant brings the medieval world to life, guiding us through a landscape enlivened by the ghosts of power-hungry earls and bishops of the old Norwegian realm and magical tales of hot springs and smoking mountains. Both the book and the map became a great source of controversy among geographers and cartographers in the following centuries...(Click here for further information)
