19.30 pm, Friday, 8 April 2011 at the IIC
ELAINE TZIMOKAS "These paintings explore the visual language of Sicily, depicting the connectedness between both the architecture and of humanity. The paintings allude to an energy embodied within the architecture and urban fabric in which the obser finds themselves drawn to, and subconcsiously longing for." BILLY DOOLAN An absolute world first, this unique exhibition presents a series of paintings depicting the island of Sicily through the eyes of the Queensland indigenous artist Billy Doolan. The paintings express, with stunning lyricism, the impact that Sicily, its people, traditions and history have had on the artist.

IIC Talks with Mariano Coreno Quasimodo's moment of inspiration
19.00 pm, Thursday, 14 April 2011 at the IIC
MARIANO CORENO, one of Australia' best-known Italian-Australian poets, lives in Melbourne.
Quasimodo is one of the great Italian poets of the twentieth century. He brings us the harmonies of the South which, in Italian poetry of the past, has meant the sickly as well as the exquisite. His own lyric form gives something new to Italian poetry. Occasionally he recalls his childhood Sicily, looking back at it from misty Milan, like in his beautiful poem " LETTERA ALLA MADRE ". He won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1959. He witnessed Italy's suffering during the Second World War. One of is best poem is " ED E' SUBITO SERA ", " And in No Time it's Evening " Mariano Coreno has a letter written to him by Quasimodo and published in TEMPO magazine, 1966.
