A Visit From the Department of Children and Families

Center For Family Services was pleased to welcome Commissioner of the Department of Children and Families, Dr. Allison Blake and Lisa Von Pier, Director of Community Partnerships, for a tour of our Commissioner Blake Visitsafe and supportive housing continuum of care. The tour was lead by residents at our GrandSlam and Camden DREAMS programs. Commissioner Blake had the chance to meet with our residents, our Youth Advisory Board members, and see first hand the great programs offered at CFS. Residents were proud to tour the visitors through their apartments and happy to share their experiences and accomplishments.

Secretary of Agriculture Visits Head Start

pictureThe New Jersey Secretary of Agriculture, Douglas Fisher, visited the Center For Family Services Head Start program at Mt. Calvary in Camden on December 19th, 2011 to observe the children enjoying lunch and to speak with the facility's nutrition coordinator about how Jersey Fresh produce will be incorporated into the children's meals.

Mt. Calvary will be receiving gleaned produce next growing season. Gleaning is going over the field or area that has just bee harvested and gathering by hand any usable parts of the crop that remain.

As part of Governor Christie's Season on Service, Secretary Fisher also spoke to the children about NJ Agriculture and the importance of healthy eating.

On December 15th, Cassie Haynes Grassia delivered exercise clothing and equipment to our FAITH program which provides a safe home for females age 12-18 with an emphasis on improving self esteem and goal setting. Cassie worked for two months to coordinate this donation with members of Cross-Fit Center City, Philadelphia. Each girl at FAITH has received a few exercise outfits, a pair of sneakers, a yoga mat, and a set of free weights. The therapists at FAITH have wanted to incorporate exercise into the therapy routine for a while, but many of the girls did not own any exercise clothes.

Cassie has not only provided the tools for FAITH, but is also working on an exercise plan for the girls and plans to visit weekly to work with them on their exercise goals. Through Cross-Fit Cassie has experienced firsthand a sense of empowerment that strength, endurance and goal achievement that exercise can bring to a person's life.

Camden Cooper Lanning Promise Neighborhood Highlights

In late November, the South Jersey Eye Center (SJEC) began holding free eye screenings and follow-up examinations for the students at Lanning Square Family School-Fetters Campus. The SJEC team drove the mobile eye van to the school on 5 separate occasions for 3 screenings and 2 follow-up examinations. The children identified as most in need of supportive eye wear were the first to be seen by the SJEC team. Approximately 25-30 students have been screened at each session. The ultimate goal is to screen every student at Fetters School and provide free eye wear to students who are vision impaired through a donation from New Eyes for the Needy.
