Comcast Employees and their Families Give Back
|

| | Comcast employees hard at work during Comcast Cares Day |
Center For Family Services once again teamed up with Comcast for their annual "Comcast Cares Day". The national day of service encourages Comcast employees along with their family and friends to give back to their community.
This year's event brought almost 60 Comcast employees and their families to the Center's Together Youth Shelter in Glassboro. Participants spent the morning weeding, creating mulch beds, planting trees and flowers, and laying the ground work for a new vegetable garden.

Comcast employees also brought their families to the event!

Together Youth Shelter provides temporary emergency shelter to more than 130 children in southern New Jersey each year. With 14 beds, Together offers home-like setting on a 5 acre property providing safe shelter, counseling, life skills training, educational services, and recreational activities. Skilled counselors help children establish goals and support them as they return to a more stable home environment.
Many thanks to the Comcast Cares Day volunteers for sprucing up Together! |

Introducing CFS' Youth Advisory Board Written by CFS' Camden DREAMS residents The Youth Advisory Board (Y.A.B.) is an open
ended board run by the youth clients of Center For Family Services. The board consists of an executive board as well as general members. The mission of Y.A.B. is to help youth understand that their voice and opinion can be heard. They are an advocacy group of peer advisors run by the youth for the youth. It was started on July 8th, 2010 and was established on December 2nd, 2010. "It was a rough start. We were lacking stable membership", says Kaysie, Y.A.B. President, "but things are finally starting to come into perspective".
The Y.A.B. has accomplished many things in the past six months. In December, Y.A.B. made Christmas cards for sick kids at Cooper University Hospital. They have also volunteered at many organizations like Cathedral Kitchen to help feed the homeless and Together Youth Shelter, assisting with groups. They are currently in efforts to volunteer at Ronald Mc Donald House.
"I believe that the Youth Advisory Board will have tremendous positive impact on the youth of Center For Family Service. As we grow we hope our advocacy grow will not only impact but inspire youth to use their voice to be positive and productive in influencing their peers, their community, and even the nation to support youth.", says Allessandra, Y.A.B. Event Coordinator.
The Y.A.B. has already organized a hoagie sale and Mother's Day flower sale and is coordinating a water ice sale and car wash in order to help fund a fashion show, another event being organized to fund Challenge Day. Y.A.B. got the idea to do a Challenge Day from the MTV show "If You Really Knew Me", which provides youth and their communities with experimental workshops and programs that demonstrate the possibility of love and connection through the celebration of diversity, truth and full expression.
"We would like to bring this to CFS so youth can understand that even though you may be in a group home, independent living, or have group counseling, you never know what could be going on in the lives of the people around you", says Kaysie. "However the cost to have this program is very expensive, which is why we have been doing these fundraisers".
Y.A.B. is also putting things together for the youth within CFS. For instance, they put together an Easter dinner for all the clients who had nowhere to go for the holiday. They're also trying to put together welcoming parties for the new clients coming to Camden Dreams.
"I hope that the Youth Advisory Board becomes very successful and accomplishes all visions of the youth and the vision of Eileen Henderson (Vice President of Child and Family Services at Center For Family Services) who made this opportunity possible. I feel as though I have a strong team of board members who are strong believers in the board", says Kaysie, "We hope to get continuous support because youth are the future of tomorrow".

Denim Day 2011
| |
Quixote Quest teens volunteering at Denim Day
|
Thanks to the collective support of individuals, businesses, organizations, and schools throughout Southern New Jersey, Center For Family Services increased awareness about the importance of sexual violence prevention in the community through the month long campaign, Denim Day.
More than 5000 community members participated in the Denim Day 2011 campaign by wearing denim throughout April as a visual symbol for ending sexual violence in our community. A variety of events were held in conjunction with Denim Day, including: an art auction and reception, "Take Back the Night", and a production of the Vagina Monologues.
Contributions to the Denim Day campaign totaled over $20,000 and will benefit the Center's Services Empowering Rights of Victims (SERV) program, the designated sexual violence program in Camden, Gloucester, and Cumberland Counties.
A special thank you to Denim Day sponsors, The Promenade at Sagemore, Rutgers University and the Cherry Hill Mall, and our many Denim Day supporters.

Program Highlight: SAFE
Living alone and almost penniless, Camden County resident, Helen, had given up. The 68 year old had recently lost her mother and at the same time, lost her will to live. She stopped opening mail, visiting doctors, and communicating with the outside world. She was on the verge of homelessness when Center For Family Services' SAFE (Services to Assist Families and the Elderly) program stepped in.
It took nearly four months of persistent calls and visits for Helen to open up her door to SAFE. By that time, she had only $600 to her name and her health was deteriorating. Slowly, she gained trust in SAFE staff, allowing them to help her apply for benefits, set up doctor's appointments, and eventually coordinate affordable senior housing. Staff worked tirelessly to help Helen regain a safe and healthy lifestyle.
There are countless cases just like Helen's happening in every community. The Center's SAFE program aims to empower older and disabled adults to maintain their independence and enhance their quality of life by providing a full menu of services.
SAFE counselors assist older adults and their families with life changes related to aging. Many of our clients are dealing with depression, grief, relationship problems, and changes in their living situation; our staff help make these transitions easier to deal with.
CFS also provides SAFE care managers to support seniors who are struggling to keep up with every day responsibilities. We offer to help manage household chores, budgets, and bills, maintain the physical and emotional health of each client, and coordinate the many needs of vulnerable adults.
We realize the toll caring for seniors and disabled adults has on their families and caregivers. With this in mind, SAFE offers individual and family counseling as well as connections with other programs and services that assist caregivers.
If you are a loved one is a current caregiver or if you know an elderly or disabled adult that is in need of our services please visit www.centerffs.org or call 856.964.1990 ext 177 for more information on SAFE, including consultation and referral services. |
