The Smart Crosswalk™ System in "Snow Country"

February / 2011
In the Depths of Winter

Greetings!

This has winter has seen exceptionally cold and snowy weather. In many parts of the country record snow and freezing temperatures have prevailed. For over a decade we have met the challenge to provide In-Roadway Warning Light (IRWL) enhanced crosswalk protection for crosswalks in areas  covered in snow.

Our solution was to develop in-pavement signal lights for IRWL crosswalk system capable of with standing the rigors of snow removal equipment.  Towards that end, a  "snowplow blade resistant" steel base plate was developed.

LightGuard's snowplow base plate is now in use in many locations throughout the country.

Smart Crosswalk  Installation Sites In Snow Country

In order to highlight the installation of an IRWL crosswalk in snow country, into both asphalt and concrete, we offer the following examples.

1) University of Illinois Urbana/Champaign - UIUC installUIUC IRWL Crosswalked a Smart Crosswalk system in 2006 in front of the Grainger Library on campus. Over the last five years they have not experienced any problems with the steel base plates as the snowplow trucks move over the crosswalk.

A study conducted by the UIUC Department of Civil and Environmentl Engineering evaluated the results of a variety of crosswalk treatments on campus. This study found that "The in-street yield-to-pedestrian sign plus in-roadway warning lights ... provided the highest courtesy yields (a courtesy yield occurs when a motorist yields to pedestrian, but the yield was not required)." It was determined that 95% of motorist complied.

Metuchen Before Installation

2)  Metuchen, New Jersey - IRWL enhanced crosswalk installation occurred in 2008. This system covers a 2-lane span with automatic activation bollards. The installation is typical of a retro-fitted system to an existing crosswalk. The installation begins with a 1/2" wide x 1 1/2" deep saw cut across the road.

3) Chittenango, New York - This IRWL crosswalk was installed on New Chittenango NYYork State Route 5 & 13 in 2006. See link to view several pictures taken in January of 2009 by a NYDOT Traffic Signal Engineer. The pictures show what the IRWL crosswalk system looks like after snow removal equipment has cleared the snow.
