Take A Look - New IRWL Sites

Greetings!

We'd like to wish all of our clients and friends a happy and productive  New Year.   Be assured that we are always ready to help your agency design effective pedestrian safety and traffic calming measures.   From our headquarters in Santa Rosa, California, we continue to assist communities in developing systems that are suited to their particular needs.  Our professional team of top-notch sales and technical staff are available to answer your questions.

In 2011, our Newsletter will continue to keep you informed about our in-roadway warning lights (IRWL's).   Last month, we took a departure from our description of the history and evolution of our products to tell you about some recent LightGuard Smart Crosswalk™ installations.

This month, we'll build on that theme by describing four additional installations that we completed at the end of 2010.  Through these recent projects, we hope to convey IRWL's broad applicability.  They have been installed in diverse settings such as an insurance company campus in Madison, Wisconsin, and a school crossing site in Colleyville, TX., as well as a military base in Corpus Christi, TX.

Three Smart Crosswalk™ Systems were installed as part of federal stimulus funding for a redevelopment project. Each crosswalk system is located on a four-lane road with a center median divider. The center median divider separates the traffic lanes so that each side can be treated as a one-way road.

The IRWL enhanced crosswalks system shown above comes with LED border enhanced pedestrian crossing signs. The IRWL system is activated by both push button and automatic activation.

City of Colleyville, Texas

This Smart Crosswalk™system was installed in November and opened for use in late December. Because of the unique unidirectional focused LED in-pavement signal light arrangement, each direction of traffic is alerted to the presence of pedestrians. This is a school crossing zone where a crossing guard has the ability to turn on the IRWL system during times children are crossing.

Corpus Christi Army Depot (CCAD), Corpus Christi, Texas

In December, the Smart Crosswalk™ System for CCAD was installed in front of base headquarters. At times, weather is heavily overcast for extended periods. To overcome this problem, the system features solar power with an AC backup interface.

The Smart Crosswalk™ System was installed with an In-Surface Activation Device (ISAD) which is similar to an in-pavement signal module. However, instead of LED lights there are infrared light beam modules. In the picture above, the ISAD is located on the left side at the corner of the crosswalk lines. Notice the tire tread marks leading towards the crosswalk zone. Several of the in-pavement signal modules are pointed towards the entry street, providing additional warning to drivers turning into the crosswalk zone.
