IB InfoDid You Know that Your School has the Only Private School International Baccalaureate Programme in Central Florida?

Life in the 21st century, in an interconnected, global society, requires critical-thinking skills and a sense of international-mindedness, that International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme students come to know and understand.

As an integral part of the high school curriculum at Windermere Preparatory school, the IB Programme offers a challenging curriculum that demands the best from both motivated students and teachers.  The IB Diploma Programme is designed as an academically challenging and balanced programme of education, with externally graded final examinations that prepare students for success at university and life beyond. The curriculum is implemented in the junior and senior years and has gained recognition and respect from the world's leading universities.  High school students at Windermere Preparatory School have the opportunity to be full IB diploma candidates, as well as the option to study in individual IB courses through the IB Certificate Program.

Full IB diploma students study six courses ensuring breadth of experience in languages, social studies, the experimental sciences and mathematics. There are three additional requirements for diploma candidates. The extended essay is a requirement for students to engage in independent research through an in-depth study of a question relating to one of the subjects they are studying. Theory of Knowledge (TOK) is a course designed to encourage each student to reflect on the nature of knowledge by critically examining different ways of knowing (perception, emotion, language and reason) and different kinds of knowledge (scientific, artistic, mathematical and historical). Creativity, action, service (CAS) requires that students actively learn from the experience of doing real tasks beyond the classroom. Students can combine all three components or do activities related to each one of them separately.

Click for more information regarding the IB Programme in our school.  If, at any time, you would like to learn more about the program in detail, please contact Dr. Karina Rodegra, IB Coordinator at [email protected], or Dr. Steven Lyng, High School Director, at [email protected].

LOWER SCHOOL

Dear Families,

September is here, and we are in full swing across the Lower School. I hope you have all logged into your Skyward account. This is where you will find information pertaining to your child, and school events. Every homeroom teacher will post the weekly newsletter and "The Butler" by noon on Saturday. These documents will highlight what is happening in the classroom, as well as the curriculum objectives for the week. You will find this information by clicking on the "Message Center" and scrolling down to the bottom of all the Lower School announcements to find the teachers' postings.  If you are having trouble locating these documents, or need assistance logging into Skyward, please contact the Lower School office or let your child's teacher know. We will be happy to help you.

New Students ERB testing

In order to have baseline data for each student, we test new students using the CTP4 exam in the fall. This year, testing for all of our new students in grades 2 through 9 will take place Monday, September 17 through Thursday, September 20. More information will be sent home to the families of new students. New students who took the CTP4 at their previous school will not be required to take the test. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Mrs. Jennifer Bloom, Lower School Guidance.

A Note from Mrs. Fults, Lower School Media Specialist

Our Accelerated Reader program is now open, and all students in grades 1 through 5 will be taking their initial STAR test very soon. This test determines the students' reading level and will be used to set individual reading goals for the quarter. For more information regarding our AR program, please click here.

The Scholastic Book Fair will be coming to WPS September 26 - October 3. More information will be sent home with students next week.

2021 Club Returns to Lower School!

The " 2021" Club originated in January 2012 from an idea conceived by a small group of WPS third graders. The club's mission is to help other children and families who are in need in Central Florida. One hundred percent of the club's donations and proceeds go directly to local outreach programs. The expectation of the 2021 Club is to have a lasting legacy of "Caring, Sharing, & Giving" at Windermere Preparatory School. The 2021 Club's mantra is to teach our children the concept of "Noblesse Oblige," to instill a desire to help those in need and who are less fortunate. Click here for more information about the "2021 Club" and our plans for this year.

"Honk Jr. The Musical"

What an amazing job WPS students did while auditioning for Honk Jr. the Musical that will perform at the Winter Garden Theater Nov. 16 and 17. We are so proud of all the students. Students came in well prepared for their auditions as they acted and sang their hearts out. The cast is posted, and with only 73 days left before opening night, don't be surprised if you hear children singing outdoors, "Out There Someone's Gonna Love Ya," a hit song from the Musical. See you at the show!

We would like to extend a very sincere thank you to the WPVA for the new playground equipment! We are truly enjoying the new balls, jump ropes and hula-hoops (see photo at top).

Sincerely,

Melissa Fagan

Director of Lower School
