LOWER SCHOOL

Dear Parents:

It is official!  We have started the 2012 school year and it is wonderful to have all of our students back on campus. Thank you for joining us on Tuesday. We look forward to working in partnership with all of our parents throughout the school year.

It is very important that all families login to Skyward.  This will be the primary mode of communication. If you have not already logged into your Skyward account, please do so as soon as possible.  We are happy to help anyone who needs assistance setting up his or her account.

Handbook and Forms: Please make sure to read the new Lower School Student-Parent Handbook  and return the handbook sign-off sheet and field trip form to your homeroom teacher by August 24.

Mark your calendar as the Lower School Open House will be Monday, August 27 at 6 pm.  This event is for parents only. More information will be sent home next week.

The campus has really come alive and we are looking forward to wonderful, productive school year.

Sincerely,

Melissa Fagan

Director of Lower School

Theresa Nabavi

Associate Director of Lower School

HIGH SCHOOL

Parents and Students:

As we conclude the first two days of classes for high school students here at Windermere Preparatory School, please accept my best wishes to all for a happy and successful school year. Keep in mind that, as always, our faculty and staff are ready and available to assist you with any questions that you may have as you get started with the 2012-13 school year.

As you know by now, we are making a transition to Skyward as our student information system. Skyward will provide an interface for parents, students, and teachers to access student schedules, grades, and other pertinent progress information. By today, students should have received login

information and login instruction from their homeroom teachers. Parents should have received password and login information from the main office at this point as well. If you are having any trouble accessing Skyward, please do not hesitate to get in touch so that we can provide assistance.

On the first two days of school, teachers spent a portion of each class reviewing key segments of the new upper school handbook with the students. Students were asked to sign the Honor Code agreement in school on Thursday.

If you are not already aware, please take note of the new ID finger image system that has been put in place for this school year. As noted on page 8 of the new handbook, this system relies on the use of a scanned picture of a student's finger, thereby eliminating the need for students having to produce a student photo ID card (that can sometimes be lost, forgotten, or shared with others). This system does not record a student's fingerprint, nor can it be used to reproduce a fingerprint. Through use of the finger scan for identification purposes, students can pay for food and other purchases from any campus outlet, including the WPS School Store. Finger images were recorded today for all high school students in attendance.

I am happy to invite discussion on any school issue of importance to you. Should you have questions after reviewing any start of school of information that you are receiving, please do not hesitate to call us.

Respectfully,
Steven J. Lyng, Ph.D.
High School Director

MIDDLE SCHOOL

Dear Middle School Families,

Whew, what a great first day! Students received a plethora of information today, getting acclimated to new protocols and prepping for personal success. We all enjoyed being on the middle school campus, 250+ students strong, united with 20 faculty members. It was certainly a busy and productive day, as students accomplished the following:

Skyward Orientation: Students learned to log in, navigate through various facets, viewing their schedule, receiving messages, and referring to the gradebook. While doing so, teachers led students to the posting of the grade level overviews, which contain helpful information for the year.

Edmodo Orientation: Additionally, students were introduced to Edmodo, an online educational site where students will interact with their teachers daily for agendas, assignments, discussion forums, and homework hand-in.

Administrative Forms: Parents, please check your WPS Communication Folders, where teachers have sent home some forms for your review and signature: Handbook Agreement, Locker Policy, and Field Trip Permission.  Click for the new Field Trip information and permission form

Schedules: Students viewed their schedules in Skyward, and received hard copies from their homeroom teachers. Next Monday, August 20, will be your first full day of regular classes. Please note that due to your individual course requests and scheduling parameters, we are unable to honor schedule changes.

Faculty Introductions: Students spent time with their grade level teachers, arts teachers, and Physical Education teachers, as well as participating in assemblies with Dean Stone, and our Guidance Counselor Melinda Simmons.

Finger Scan System: All students made a trip to the Middle School Office for familiarity, but also to register themselves in our new finger scan system, which allows them to check out books from the Learning Commons, and make purchases in the Caf and School Store.

Finally, we gifted each student with a WPS flash drive bracelet, which will certainly come in handy throughout the year as they save files and back up their work.

As we look to our middle school tradition of Middle School Mania, be reminded to wear your PE uniforms and bring water. We'll enjoy a cookout lunch at 1:00. Thank you, WPVA! Click for info

See you soon!

Softball

For the first time in school history, Windermere Prep will field a girls softball team for the fall ball season.
All students are welcome to play. Whether you're a beginner, intermediate or advanced player, Coach Pollock wants you to suit up and play. Games will start in mid-September at the NTC softball facility in Clermont. Although the official schedule is TBD, we typically would play two games per week starting around 6:30 p.m. We will play other high school teams in the area, but more importantly, our competition will be in line with our team's level of play.
This is a great opportunity for Windermere Prep students to get a head start on developing their softball skills, have a great time playing, and be part of the fall season team.
Workouts and practices will start in late August/early September. Again, all levels of players are welcome to attend. Coach Pollock guarantees that no matter what experience you have or what level player you are, you will learn the game, improve your skill sets, and have a great time being part of the first-ever fall season softball team. Info: [email protected].

Titus Dynamic Fitness is available at Windermere Prep. Click for details.

Cheerleading

All students in grades 6-12 who are interested in participating in our school cheerleading program: we will be hosting an informational meeting on Wednesday August 22 at 3:30 p.m. in Room 124. The Tennis Academy

Friday, August 17, from 3.00 - 5.00 p.m. is our final day of free assessments to help parents select the appropriate group/lessons for their children.

We are now scheduling for the Fall program, which begins on August 20. All information and forms for the new program can be found on our websites, orlandotennisacademy.com or elitetennisusa.com   Registration forms and waivers need to be downloaded and dropped off in the main office or the tennis office (at The Learning Commons facing the courts), with payment before August 20 to start the Fall Tennis Program.
