Compass & News
Chris RalphGreetings!

Spring has sprung, at least it briefly looked like it before the snow started falling again...

We have great news to share with you, and part of that news is that you can find it in a few different locations - this e-newsletter, and on our website's News and Events page and on our newest feature, the CAPhO Compass (our blog). See the left sidebar for recent postings.

The Education Committee is very happy with your response to the "Oncology Basics" online education module, and encourages those of you who haven't completed the training yet to set aside some time!

Two of our members, Ing Collins and Crystal Amos, might not get to it right away though, as they have been awarded travel grants for ISOPP and HOPA.

A new addition to our e-newsletter is the "Member Spotlight". Find out about Pamela Yafai's fear of heights, her need for gardening tools and what she loves about oncology pharmacy.

Let me know if you have any questions about what the Communications Committee is working on (here is a list of members), or general inquiries about CAPhO. You can contact me directly, or any of the Executive Committee members (listed here with their email addresses).

Sincerely,

Christopher Ralph

Happy Spring from the Education Committee (CEC)

The CEC is very excited by the success of "Oncology Basics". Since its launch in February, many members have completed the online module and have provided amazing feedback. As far as content and fulfilling learning objectives, many participants have rated the program as "very-good" and "excellent". Some of the additional comments from members include:

  • "I see it as having great value for new pharmacists or technicians entering into the area of oncology practice in Canada."
  • "I found this to be a good review of the major principles of oncology pharmacy practice."
  • "I found this program extremely concise and easy to learn from."
  • "Congratulations on putting together something that is relevant and accessible to all Canadian oncology pharmacy practitioners...I love the idea of a standardized orientation to the practice!!"

I'm so pleased that members are finding the "Oncology Basics" tutorials informative and useful. If you haven't taken a look at it yet, I encourage you to do so. For those practitioners who are new to oncology, the module is a fantastic introduction to oncology pharmacotherapy and for oncology pharmacy veterans; it is a wonderful review and confidence builder. Take some time on a rainy spring day and check out "Oncology Basics"!

Pamela Yafaimemberspotlight CAPhO Member Spotlight - Pamela Yafai

Pamela Yafai, Clinical Pharmacist, Horizon Health Network- Saint John Regional Hospital, Saint John, NB

Newsy item: Last month, I successfully overcame my fear of heights by parasailing in Aruba!

What is the best part of your job? Without a doubt - the opportunity to develop personal relationships with patients and their families while participating in their care. I also love working collaboratively as part of an interdisciplinary team to improve the lives and outcomes of our patients.

What inspired you to work in oncology pharmacy? I knew very little about oncology pharmacy when I accepted my current position immediately after finishing hospital residency, and quickly discovered that it was a practice area very unlike any of my previous work experiences/rotations. Working within a specialty as complex and rapidly evolving as oncology is always challenging and never boring - so I hope to be here for years to come!

Where was the last conference you attended? NOPS 2011 - and looking forward to ROSS in Halifax with our Atlantic group.

Where did you go to university? Dalhousie University- Class of 2007

What job did you do before working in oncology pharmacy? I began my practice in oncology immediately after pharmacy residency.

What sports and/or hobbies do you do? I enjoy running, travelling, cooking, and am an avid reader (I chair our pharmacy book club).  Our recently-purchased home has beautiful flower gardens which we inherited from the previous owners- my newest hobby for the upcoming summer will be attempting to learn which plants are weeds and which are flowers!

What book are you reading right now? I am now reading "The Night Circus" by Erin Morgenstern... although I have recently been on the "Hunger Games" bandwagon and loved the series.  I would recommend the book "The Emperor of All Maladies: Biography of Cancer" by Siddhartha Mukherjee to everyone, especially oncology health care professionals.  I initially avoided choosing this book as I prefer to read books for pleasure that have nothing to do with work- however once I started I couldn't put it down!

Where would you want a mystery flight to take you on vacation? Anywhere hot and sunny would be absolutely fine with me on this chilly April day!  I am also very interested in visiting Africa someday, as well as many parts of Europe that I have yet to visit (eg. Germany and Ireland) and would love to go back to Switzerland.  Do I have to pick just one location? ;)

Where were you born? Born in Ottawa but I grew up in Prince Edward Island and call this province home. Both are favourite places of mine to visit!
