Ah...
Thanksgiving!

Joy new photo Aug

...and so much to be thankful for... life, health, friends, family, freedom, provision. The reasons are as varied as our customers... young, old, outdoor enthusiasts, health conscious, nature lovers, and those of us who just simply believe in the philosophy behind J.R.LIGGETT'S products and all they stand for. We are thankful that you 'get it' and are faithful to spread the 'good news'.

Last month's Annapolis Boat show was the perfect arena for J.R. to showcase the versatility of his Shampoo Bars and accompanying products ... such a terrific fit for sailors and land lovers alike; here's to smooth sailing and buoyed spirits!

Ken and Jen Ballentine's recent cycling trip across the United States to spread awareness of the importance of Organ Donation is an inspiring, touching read and a testament to responsible, thrifty, selective choices that are good for us and the environment.

J.R.'s good friend, Sananda  offers us smart choices in the way of his soothing, healing skin care products. Simply Enchanting.

Congratulations to Gene Bals of Lubbock, TX this month's winner of $100 worth of J.R.LIGGETT products. Gene traveled 5, 671 miles in search his ancestral roots... and now has at least two new things to be thankful for; family and free product!

This month J.R. reflects on the meaning of being grateful for not having just arrived at the destination, but also an appreciation of the journey---in other words, the turkey might be the main course, but the trimmings rounded out the event!

Thanksgiving... America at it's best!  Enjoy!

See you next month...

Annapolis boat

ANNAPOLIS
what's in a boat show
?

Aside from the many beautiful sailboats, anchors and sail makers, there are sailors, lots and lots of sailors, along with sailing magazines and distributors of all things marine.

Now why would we be attending The Annapolis Boat Show, the largest Sailboat show in the US? Simple - to introduce a lot of people who could benefit from finding out about our shampoo bars and other products.

A somewhat specialized market you might think but our shampoo is exceptional for boaters of all types. Be they Sailboats, Motorboats, Cruise boats, whatever. Our shampoo makes traveling on them both easy and rewarding.

To start out with - No it doesn't work in saltwater... but then again who would want to wash your hair or body in salt water to begin with? ABS anchorBathing in saltwater leaves your skin and hair never really dry, it's sticky and yucky, and your are still covered with salt! No thanks when there is such a terrific alternative such as what J.R.LIGGETT'S Bar Shampoo has to offer.

Our shampoo requires so little water to wash and rinse there is no excuse for not having clean hair when ever you like. Who ever said you have to look and feel "salty" just to be a sailor?

We enjoyed handed out numerous J.R.LIGGETT'S ultra cool new

"eZ-pouches" containing our new Ultra Balanced Bars to people at the show, at seminars, and at booths. Editor at large for "Cruising World Magazine" and sailor extraordinaire Herb McCormick was given one after a seminar he spoke at along with Mark Schrader captain of Ocean Watch, the sailboat that carried Mark, Herb and crew on a 28,000 miler circumnavigation "Around the Americas" as if it were one large island. They were both quite interested in what we gave them and how it could be of benefit to other sailors.

Don Street was also a recipient of our shampoo and carrier. This man has so many miles under his belt from years and years of sailing that I knew he would  realize and appreciate what we gave him.

J.R.LIGGETT'S Bar Shampoo not only makes sense from a water conservancy standpoint on a boat with limited supplies of fresh water, but it also takes up so little room and weight only 6 ozs including the pouch. This mere 6 ozs though translates to the equivalent of nearly a 24 oz bottle of liquid! It doesn't spill as a liquid would and takes up very little room when stowed in your sea bag.

If you are still into shaving everyday while offshore (just because you like to), there is no reason not to as again our shampoo bar is exceptional for shaving and leaves your face clean and smooth, lubricating a mans beard or a lady's legs to give you an ultra smooth shave. And again it rinses off quickly and easily with no irritation and is extremely mild and hypoallergenic so even people with allergies and skin sensitivities can use our shampoo bars with great results.

Oh for that quick fresh water shower when you are lucky enough to be afforded one, again it rinses quickly so again not much water to feel refreshed and clean.

Washing out that salt-crusted tee shirt and swimsuit, oh yea! J.R.LIGGETT'S Shampoo Bars love fabric and clean it so mildly that it does not damage either the color or fibers, and did we mention that it rinses quickly and easily.

Win/Win solution.

Yes a large boat show like this is about more than just the beautiful yachts exhibited. It sure is fun touring them though, imagining yourself off somewhere in the South Pacific enjoying swaying palm trees, sunshine and a warm ocean breeze... ah maybe someday.

 PEDAL POWER crossing the USA.

When my husband Ken retired, he and I decided to pedal our recumbent trikes across the United States in an effort to raise awareness for Organ Donation.  We would be riding in memory of my daughter Alex who at the age of 11 was hit by a car and killed.  Prompted by a commercial she had seen on TV, my little girl had told me just six months prior to the accident that if anything happened to her, she would want to be an organ donor.  I honored her wishes and on our journey from North Carolina to Oregon we would meet Dillon, the little boy who received Alex's heart.

 oregon nov

Having never done something like this before one could barely even call us cyclists when we left.  Oh sure, we went for bike rides together but touring for long distances is a lot different than cruising through the park, and the ride we were planning would be nearly 4500 miles long and would take us almost 6 months to complete.  This meant that we would have to be very deliberate about what we brought with us.  We would have to pack everything we needed onto those trikes and there would be no room for anything that was not an absolute necessity.  We planned to camp 90% of the time so being self sufficient was a requirement, and we had other priorities as well.

Ken and I try to be very responsible about how and where our dollars go. We prefer to support local farmers and to eat organically whenever possible.  We also like to use products whose impact on our precious Mother Earth is minimal.  Supporting small family businesses is something we believe in and we try very hard not to do our shopping at the big box stores, instead choosing to invest in real people.  jen novIt matters where our money goes, and with these things in mind we set about to find the perfect products to take with us on our adventure.

We each got two or three outfits from the local thrift shop and a new pair of shoes.  And since we were taking our dog Simon with us on the tour, we got him a sweater and a fleece jacket at a yard sale so he could stay warm on the cold nights we would spend hunkered down on mountaintops. We got nearly all of our camping gear either used or on sale.  Our trip was funded solely by donations from people who believed in us and what we were doing so we wanted to make smart choices when it came to making purchases with that money.

"What other ways could we save money, be kind to the environment, and support family businesses?" I muttered to myself while trying to figure out how to cram a bottle of shampoo, another bottle of conditioner, and still another bottle of soap into my bag.  When the shampoo bottle came open and spilled it's contents all over my clothes, I knew that was NOT going to work and that there had to be a better way.  But what option did I have?  I was going to be pedaling all day every day and I needed to be able to get cleaned up each night.

A trip to our local health food store solved my dilemma.  It was there that Ken and I discovered J.R.LIGGETT'S Herbal Bar Shampoo .  Drawn to it's neat old-timey packaging Ken picked up a bar and handed it to me.  I held it to my nose and took in the fresh clean earthy scent. I closed my eyes and took another deep whiff.  When I flipped the bar over and began reading the back of the packaging I realized that not only did this shampoo have an amazing natural herbal aroma, but the label said everything I wanted to hear:  No Chemical Concoctions. No Harmful Detergents. No Animal Testing or Animal Products. Completely Bio-degradable. Great for Travelers. And, it even said I wouldn't need a conditioner!  Now that I did not believe.  I have fine hair that has a tendency to be dry and brittle and never in my life have I been able to go without a conditioner.  Never.  Unable to resist the wonderful scent and big promises, I took it home and tried it in spite of my skepticism.  The very next day I took all my bottles of shampoo and conditioner out to the trash.  Never again would I use anything but J.R.LIGGETT'S on my hair (or my body) and now I get compliments all the time about how healthy my hair looks.  And without a conditioner!  When I logged on to www.jrliggett.com and learned more about the story behind this handmade shampoo bar and about what goes into making such an amazing product, I liked it even more.

J.R.LIGGETT'S lathers up great whether you are cleaning up in a river (won't hurt the fishies) or in the comfort of your own home and it leaves you feeling clean and moisturized like those other soaps just can't.  And when I buy J.R.LIGGETT'S products, I know I am investing in a real person who is living his life deliberately, following his dreams, doing what he loves, and who is providing the world with something we can all benefit from.  Healthy, happy hair!

We completed our ride earlier this month and we are proud to announce that we were able to get over 85 people to register to be organ donors.  And we also got many of those same people to try J.R.LIGGETT'S Shampoo.  When you discover something this great you just want to tell people about it!  We are currently wintering in the town of South Fork, CO.  If you are interested in learning more about our trip please feel free to look at our blog:  kenandjennc.blogspot.com or to see where we are now you can find us at: kenandjen-rockymountainhigh.blogspot.com.

 NANAK'S
"EXTREME"
totally top of the line
(and free for 10 days)
- see offer above -

From his ranch in Taos, New Mexico, in the shadows of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, our good friend Sananda offers us his pure and natural skin care essentials made with heedful attentiveness and appreciation of the myriad healing, rejuvenating, and flavorful properties of nature' plants and herbs. In this Land of Enchantment, where scrub trees and golden-leafed Cottonwoods stand as sentinels against the enormous expanse of light and raw beauty, in this land of the meshing of ancient cultures, and with a deep connection to the earth, Sananda has developed with perception and intuitive thought and utmost care, his moisturizing lip balms and healing skin repair products. Recognizing their outstanding effectiveness, J.R.LIGGETT'S has seen fit to offer these products to loyal customers... tell me, would J.R. be a party to anything less?

"Sananda, Hannah (his better half) sananda and hannahand I have been good friends for many years, our first meeting was sharing a booth at a Natural Foods Tradeshow. This first meeting seemed to click for both of us and since have spent some wonderful times together. I decided a few years back to add his line to our products on our website and since have done very well with them. They are truly unique and superior to any other items like them on the market. Simply the Best there is!"   JR LIGGETT

Nanak's Lip Smoothies, all natural, and produced by hand for nearly 30 years, heal and soften chapped and moisture-robbed lips, protect from the drying sun, and harsh winds in summer or winter. Active sunscreen: PABA, SPF factor: 10. The ingredients are pure vegetable oils (Canola whichsmoothies Nov is easily absorbed and for all skin types), moisturizing almond, apricot (provides natural moisture for sensitive, dry or inflamed skin), Jojoba (promotes skin healing and is a bacteria fighter), beeswax (produced by honeybees, a superior barrier cream), lecithin, Vitamin E, Aloe Vera (moisturizes), and flavor. The Smoothies come in four captivating flavors; a warm, delicious 'taste' of Coconut, sweet, fragrant Almond, bracing, sparkling fresh Spearmint, and Unscented. Shall we say, 'icing on the cake'?

The X-TREME Smoothie and indeed, all of Nanak's Smoothies are aptly named... they glide on smooth and soft, never gummy, thick, slick, nor with a strong, medicinal smell. With an SPF factor of 15, they are superior for all outdoor sports, use, and activities; skiing, surfing, tennis, mountain climbing, camping, biking, bird watching... wherever the sun shines or the wind blows. From my experience, I've found them indispensable when the temperature drops; my nose and hands get cold, and my lips begin to dry out... I keep my X-TREME Smoothie in my pocket and re-apply The "Ranch" in Taos, NMthrough-out the day and before bed. The Smoothies are not just for active outdoor types, but also those who would spend a lot of time in a dry-air atmosphere within a home or building.

Nanak's Skin Repair contains pure vegetable oils, beeswax, lecithin, comfrey, spearmint leaves, chamomile, goldenseal, Vitamin E, Aloe Vera and vanilla. At a full, .5 ounce, this is the 'everything salve' for lips, chapped skin, eye lines, cracked hand, cuticles and even diaper rash. Comfrey has been known for centuries as a priceless herb that promotes wound healing, tissue regeneration, and is useful for the topical treatment of burns, skin ulcerations, abrasions, lacerations, flea and insect bites, or just about any skin irritation. The healing effects of comfrey are attributable to allantoin, a compound shown to speed cell production both inside and outside the body. (www.anniesremedy.com). Chamomile, known for it's analgesic and relaxation properties, is effective for sore, tired muscles and promotes healthy skin. Goldenseal, useful as an antiseptic, also heals skin wounds. And Lecithin... what an amazing ingredient; "an effectual emulsifier that attaches oil and moisture together. It can further allow users to abstain from skin care products containing harmful chemicals".(www.edu.udym.com). Lecithin restores skin's moisture. Some studies have indicated that lecithin increases the gamma globulin in the blood; this helps fight infection. It has also proved valuable in the treatment of certain skin ailments, including acne, eczema, and psoriasis. (www.ezinearticles.com).

When carelessly using a new razor with a bit too much gusto, I experienced razor burn on my legs... out came Nanak's Skin Repair, and immediately after applying the ointment, the burning and itching stopped, and the redness promptly disappeared. On hands damaged by the exposure to the elements and over-zealous washing, Nanak's has proved to be an invaluable product for 'first aid' care. Sananda pays careful attention to what is good for our bodies.

At some point in our lives--- and for some of us who are further down the path than others--- we come to recognize that deep need and internal yearning for an earth connection... that desire that is difficult to define, yet, when we see open land, a stand of majestic trees, the flight of the hawk, the haze of a mountain range, the scent of freshly turned soil or simply feel the coolness of a pure, strong wind on our face, we know we are 'there'. Sananda' products have brought us our connection... our reality of healing and peace to body and mind and soul.

How & why:

My daughter, my grand-daughter, and I traveled to the Czech Republic on October 11, 2010 in search of ancestors.  My maternal grandparents immigrated from Makov, Czech Republic to Crete, Nebraska in May of 1884.  There had been no contact between the Czech family and the Nebraska family for the 126 years since.  We found a great family, that had no idea we existed in the US, and we shared a great time, great food, and great beer.

 November...
Thanksgiving ...
...not just another grand turkey dinner.

Turkey, cranberries, pumpkin pie with all the trimmings, family and friends. Yes that and more goes into the making of a fine Thanksgiving tradition. Here in New England traditions are held near and dear and Thanksgiving is right up there at the top of the list.

Big gatherings for Thanksgiving Dinner, smelling the aroma of roasting turkey all through the house, kids playing in the yard. Sometimes even having a snowball fight. It gets cold up here in New Hampshire quickly after summers glory has long faded.

To me Thanksgiving though is about more than just a robust dinner with family and friends, it is about a time set aside especially to reflect why one should feel thankful in the first place.

Ones health, family, and prosperity all go into the why for being thankful. We live in a nation that allows us the freedoms to make our own choices in life and reap the benefits or disappoints they bring about. Life has so many twists and turns to it that one rarely knows what to expect next. For some that can also be the fun of it.

This is one reason a person has to grasp each moment and treasure it, you never know when it might be the last. Treasure all that is given you, and brush aside all the rest as the experience of getting there. After all for me it is the voyage, not so much the destination that counts. Sure you have to have goals and destinations, but without "the getting there" it would be of considerably less value once obtained.

Thanksgiving as we know it today is largely the creation of Mrs. Sarah Josepha Hale, the editor of Godey's Lady's Book, one of the first women's magazines in America. Mrs. Hale spent 36 years browbeating public officials high and low before finally getting Thanksgiving declared a national holiday in 1863.

Now you know the when, where and why of Thanksgiving. From all of us here at J.R.LIGGETT'S  we wish you the very best this holiday season,  and dont' eat too much!
