A constant battle for natural oils.

From the day we are born, we begin to age. We began with that wonderfully soft, pliable skin and all those natural body oils that kept our skin, scalp and hair healthy and problem free. I won't say it's all downhill after that, but when we reach our mid-50's and older, our scalp oils change, and usually not for the better. We will find, most likely on a daily basis, that our natural scalp oils have slowed production...what we all wished for when we were in our teen-age years, right? But now the pendulum has swung in the opposite direction and possibly for the first time in our life, we may be experiencing a dry, painful, itchy scalp. Let's face it, our skin changes with aging and time. The accumulation of those summers we spent developing our tans, hours in a tanning bed, or just the passage of the years themselves, has taken a toll on the condition of our skin. We might not appreciate the effects, and to a certain extent, we do have to live with some of the results of the previous years of abusing one of our most visible organs--our skin. Some of us age more gracefully than others in the sense that our skin may look younger, but inevitably, skin tissue does break down and presents various troublesome issues to deal with.

In older men and women, the slowdown of the oil production in sebaceous glands continues and even gathers pace, so that the skin dries and thins. Older skin is less elastic, less oily, and thinner, thus making it more susceptible to injury. The signs of earlier skin abuse and damage becomes visible. In younger skin, the cells are replaced about every 21 to 40 days. As one ages, the cells regenerate more slowly, and the rate of replacement is approximately half what it was previously. We will notice our skin becoming drier and thinner due to fat loss. Scratches, cuts or bumps can take longer to heal. Older people will need to give their skin more care than when they were younger.

Many older people experience dry skin most often on their lower legs, elbows and lower arms. Some possible reasons could be from not drinking enough liquids, staying out in the sun, being in dry air (either indoors or outdoors), less oil produced, and using harsh, drying soaps and taking hot baths (warm water baths are less dehydrating). Because older people have thinner skin, scratching itches can cause bleeding that can lead to infection. Some medicines make the skin itchier. Itching can also cause sleep problems--waking up because of a feeling of 'tightness' in the skin and it's resultant irritation. Severe itchy skin (pruritus) can be very uncomfortable and cause sleep loss and other symptoms of skin problems.

The most common physical problems in older adults are changes is how well they can see, hear, move, and talk. There is less arm and shoulder movement, slower reflexes, and unsteadiness. Arthritis may be affecting our hand and arm strength resulting in difficulty in opening containers, unscrewing lids or simply grasping an object. Safety is an issue as we age. We aren't as limber or manually dexterous as we once were.
