Greetings!   Parallel Paths logo

This new year marks the beginning of many exciting things for Choices and for all of you. Choices is now accepting TennCare and some private insurance plans. If you would like to request an appointment, please click here.

Choices is also co-sponsoring a special performance of the Tony Award-winning musical, Spring Awakening on Saturday, March 3rd. It is produced in Memphis by Playhouse on the Square. Spring Awakening is the story of teens coming of age in a socially and sexually repressive village in 19th Century Germany. Choices is a co-sponsor because the show's message is one we advocate every day, that we must begin to talk to our kids about their sexuality and reproductive health!

Tickets for the March 3rd benefit performance and reception are $50 and are available online. Please join us in the theater on March 3rd for Spring Awakening!

Thank you so much for your support!

Reproductive Health Feature of the Month:   The facts about the birth control patch

The patch (Ortho Evra) is a skin patch worn on the lower abdomen, buttocks, or upper body. A new patch is used every week, but one is not worn on the forth week in order to have a menstrual period. The patch is 98-99% effective at preventing pregnancy. It, however, appears to be less effective in women weighing over 198 pounds.

The patch is available at CHOICES once you have an Annual or Semi-Annual exam.

More important information

  • The patch does not protect against HIV (AIDS) or any other sexually transmitted diseases.
  • The patch should not be used if you smoke cigarettes and are over 35 years old.

Parallel Paths Lunch and Learn Sessions

Through our educational series of Lunch and Learns, CHOICES staff has been working to educate Memphis medical and social service providers about how to better serve clients by integrating HIV/AIDS and reproductive health care.

Topics have included the following:

  • HIV 101 for Providers
  • Reproductive Health for Women Living with HIV
  • HIV and Menopause
  • Integrating Reproductive Health and HIV Testing
  • Parenting Options for Men Living with HIV

These sessions have been conducted at CHOICES with a wonderful lunch provided by a Project Greenfork restaurant.  Here is what some participants had to say...

"As social service providers we don't always get the clinical side and it is important for us to be able to discuss these things with our clients."

"My women clients get upset when diagnosed with HIV about the notion of not being able to have kids due to their HIV status.  From this Lunch and Learn series I am able to tell them about their options and give them hope."

"Because of my coming to these Lunch & Learns I am now on a new committee at Friends for Life working on how to address the needs of our clients who are victims of interpersonal violence."

To discuss scheduling this series of learning opportunities for your own staff email Katy Leopard or call 274-3550 x104.

How Do Latinos View Abortion?
Many people including the media assume that Latinos are predominately conservative and anti-choice because of religious or cultural beliefs. A new poll that has been conducted by Lake Research Partners, however, has found that strong majorities of Latino registered voters support access to legal abortions. This illustrates that there are widespread misconceptions about how Latinos view abortion.  For more information visit the National Latina Institute for Reproductive Health website.
