CHOICES in the news

Lamplighter

Greetings! ,

So much fun!  I am truly grateful to all of you who helped us celebrate our rebranding last month.  It was an historic occasion for our small but mighty organization which has been providing critical medical care to the MidSouth since 1974.

I am also full of gratitude to live in a community where so many people value reproductive health, freedom and justice. See great photos of some of them to the right, and many more on our Facebook page!

If you are feeling grateful to those professionals who
provide such needed care in our city, sometimes at their own risk, I hope you will consider making a

You can give any amount and in a number of ways. Your tax deductible gift will help to ensure that high-quality, judgement-free reproductive health services and education remain available to you and your children in the years to come.

In medical news, the article below describes the CDC's recent recommendation for boys and girls to be vaccinated against HPV which can cause cervical, throat and genital cancers. There is also new information suggesting that HPV may have links to heart disease and stroke in women.

And though it's only November, Choices is getting ready for a Spring Awakening!  Read more about our sponsorship of Playhouse on the Square's March 2012 production of this Tony-award winning musical, and why we feel so strongly about its message of the importance of educating our children about the facts of life.

Thank you again for your ongoing support of Choices. All of us here wish you and your families a wonderful Thanksgiving!

With a grateful heart,

Rebecca

teensCDC Recommends HPV-Vaccine for Both Boys & Girls

Virus now linked to cervical & genital cancers, throat cancers, heart disease & stroke.

Last week, the Center for Disease Control's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices has now officially recommended that boys and men ages 13-to-21 be vaccinated against the sexually transmitted disease HPV (human papillomavirus) to protect from anal and throat cancers.

A recent study published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology reports that the same human papillomavirus (type 16) that is responsible for many cervical cancers is now associated with an alarming rise in throat cancers. Women infected with cancer-causing strains of HPV appear also to be at increased risk for cardiovascular diseases and stroke.

"This is cancer, for Pete's sake," Advisory Committee member Dr. William Schaffner, chairman of the department of preventive medicine at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, recently told the New York Times. "A vaccine against cancer was the dream of our youth."

Private insurers are now required to cover HPV vaccines for girls and young women with no co-pay under the 2010 health reform legislation, and the CDC's recent decision will extend this coverage to boys and young men, effective one year after the date of the recommendation.

Choices recommends that you talk to your doctor about HPV vaccinations for teen girls and boys. The vaccine is also available at Choices by appointment.  Call 274-3550.

Best Musical Spring AwakeningGet Ready for a Spring Awakening

Spring Awakening is a rock musical adaptation of the controversial 1892 play of the same title by Frank Wedekind.

Set in late-19th century Germany, the show focuses on teenagers who are discovering the inner and outer tumult of sexuality. Spring Awakening was temporarily banned in Germany due to its inclusion of such subjects as abortion, homosexuality, rape, child abuse and suicide.

"The moral of this story is 'talk to your kids!'," says Choices Director Rebecca Terrell. "This piece of theater will give us a chance to preach this message to the parents of Memphis' young people. They need to hear information on love and life from people they love and trust."

The musical fuses folk melodies with alternative rock in its award winning score. Choices will co-sponsor the upcoming Memphis production by Playhouse on the Square.  A special benefit evening with art and live music is planned for Saturday March 3 with proceeds to support Choices. Benefit tickets will only be available through Choices and will go on sale in January 2012.

Spring Awakening received eleven 2007 Tony Award nominations, winning eight, including Tonys for best musical, direction, book, score and featured actor. Reserve the date - you won't want to miss this exciting theatrical event.

Note: If you already have season tickets to POTS (and really, all of you should), we hope you'll use them for some of their many other fabulous productions, and that you'll reserve your tickets to Spring Awakening directly from Choices in January!

For more information on Choices' sponsorship of Spring Awakening, or to help with the fundraising event, call Rebecca at 274-3550.
