Reproductive Health |
Last Month in Rome
Greetings!
Last month in Rome, UNAIDS and The ATHENA Network launched a special report on international innovations in women's reproductive health and HIV. We are proud to share that the Memphis Center for Reproductive Health is one of only two U.S. based programs featured in this global report.
You can read about MCRH's efforts to integrate HIV prevention, testing, and care into sexual and reproductive health services on our website and in the report's case study Service Providers in the United States: Leading the integration of HIV into sexual and reproductive health and rights services.
I want to acknowledge MCRH Assistant Director Jennifer Marshall for her leadership in developing our groundbreaking HIV/Reproductive Health programs, as well as the MAC AIDS Fund, AIDS United (formerly the National AIDS Fund), the MidSouth AIDS Fund, and the Shelby County Ryan White Program, for enabling us to undertake this important work.
As always, on behalf of the thousands of patients we serve each year, thanks so much for your support.

Becoming a Positive Parent
The latest issue of Beta (Bulletin of Experimental Treatment for AIDS) discusses the options available now for people living with HIV/AIDS who want to parent.
As author Dr. Hadley Leggett states, "roughly three-quarters of HIV positive people in the United States are of reproductive age, and multiple recent studies have found that an HIV diagnosis does little to dampen the desire to have a child."
MCRH works with HIV postive men and women who are interested in pursuing their options for biological parenting, including working with surrogates. For more information on our Fertility Services, contact Nikole Gettings at 901-791-9387. |

Birth Control & Other Preventive Services to Be Covered Without Copays
This week U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Kathleen Sebelius announced that HHS will adopt recommendations from the Institute of Medicine (IOM) to require health insurers to cover "all Food and Drug Administration approved contraceptive methods, sterilization procedures, and patient education and counseling for all women with reproductive capacity" without co-pays or deductibles for patients.
At least one well-woman preventive care visit annually will be covered, along with other critical services including PAP tests which can detect cervical cancer.
"This is fantastic news for women's health," says MCRH Executive Director Rebecca Terrell. "It is an acknowledgement that women have gender-specific health needs, and that these deserve the same level of coverage as many preventive services that affect both men and women."
The ruling goes into effect immediately, but plans have until August 2012 to provide the required coverage. |
