Not Your Mother's IUD
Copper IUD
Greetings!

Did you know that an IUD (intra-uterine device) is one of the most safe, effective, inexpensive (over time), and underused forms of birth control available today?

Over 40 years ago problems with certain types of IUDs, which are no longer used, frightened patients and physicians (remember the Dalkon Shield?). Today, based on years of study and overwhelmingly clear evidence, the new IUDs have been proven to be safe for almost all women of any age, including teens.

Since they are effective for 5 - 10 years after insertion,

an IUD can get a teen girl through her high school and college years without a pregnancy and without having to make decisions about contraception on a daily, weekly or monthly basis.

Although IUDs cost more than some other methods initially ($500 - $800 depending on type), the cost over time can average as little as five dollars per month. In addition, there are financial assistance funds which can help cover the costs of the devices for patients who qualify.

We hope you'll take a moment to read more about IUDs and help us spread the word about these safe, effective methods. Call today for an appointment or feel free to email our clinicians with any questions you may have.

Here's to your health, and as always, thanks so much for your support!

Protecting Our Teens

Every day about 12,000 people ages 15 to 24 are infected with HPV (human papillomavirus). Some types of HPV can cause cervical and other cancers, and some can cause genital warts in men and women.

An estimated 8 out of 10 women will become infected in their lifetime, and 30 women in the U.S. each day will be diagnosed with cervical cancer. Because the virus often has no signs or symptoms many people don't know they're infected.

Gardasil is a vaccine that protects men and women from the 4 specific types of HPV that can cause cervical cancer and genital warts.  It is most effective it if is administered before a person becomes sexually active, which is why it is recommended for both boys and girls as young as 9 years of age.

MCRH offers the Gardasil vaccine for men, women and teens.  We also offer PAP smears and colposcopies to screen for cervical cancer. Call 274-3550 or visit our website  to make an appointment.

Building a Coordinated Community Response to Memphis' High Teen Birth Rate

Once a month for more than two years, an informal group of healthcare professionals, social services providers, educators and researchers shared brown bag lunches while they talked about teen pregnancy and teen parenting in Memphis. Now an official coalition more than 50 agencies strong, Memphis Teen Vision (MemTV) has become a coordinated community response to the high rate of teen pregnancies and births in the Mid South.

"We hope to increase the public dialogue about the impact of teen pregnancies on our community," says Dr. Lynda Sagrestano, MemTV Co-Chair, and Director of the Center for Research on Women at the University of Memphis. MemTV supports comprehensive sex education, promotes services for pregnant and parenting teens, and advocates for policies and programs that promote adolescent sexual health.

Memphis Center for Reproductive Health Director, Rebecca Terrell, and Dr. Muriel Rice, Family Planning Coordinator for the Shelby County Health Department, were recently elected to serve with Dr. Sagrestano as MemTV's Co-Chairs. "The national teen birth rate in 2010 was 42 (teens per thousand)," says Ms. Terrell. "Tennessee's rate was worse at 56, but Shelby County's rate was a staggering 67.  As a community we have to do a better job of protecting our teen's health and futures."

If you are interested in participating in MemTV, or would like someone from the coalition to speak on the issue of teen pregnancy at your school, church, club, or civic organization, call 901-678-2770.
