Garden displayMay in NH Means Party Time in the Garden

It is said that you can bury a lot of troubles digging in the dirt. Amherst Town Library is here to help you bury your troubles and "party" in the garden. In that spirit we invite you to stop by our May gardening display table near the circulation desk. You will find books, videos, magazines and more to inspire, motivate, and educate you. As an added bonus there will be a raffle drawing each week for the month of May. County Stores, Agway of Milford, The Garden Party Boutique and Trombly Gardens have generously joined with us to reward you with a chance to win one of our weekly prizes.
Along the Garden Path at the Library...

By Marti Warren

The Amherst Garden Club civic volunteers each year plant and maintain the gardens around the library. These gardens are for the pure enjoyment of those passing by. In recent years there has been many conversations over the plantings. What are these plants? Where do you purchase them? Are the peppers edible? How do you choose what will be planted?  It is hoped that this column will answer these questions over the summer months as well as point out some of what is in bloom.

Who does the gardens? The garden club now in its 40th year takes its civic projects very seriously. There are about 20 women who volunteer to work on the library gardens during the summer and into the fall. Other members work in different areas around the town. After planting the annuals along the front entrance in late spring, deadheading and making sure they are weeded, fertilized and getting proper water is an important job. The garden behind the library has tables and comfortable chairs to sit and have a quiet lunch or read a book. These gardens were designed by Claudia Everest of Northland Landscape and consist of perennials and shrubs for easy care. While the front entrance is colorful and full of plants the back is peaceful and cool during the hot summer months.

The stone wall garden in front of the library is a combination of perennials with a few annuals. In the winter everything dies back and it appears nothing is there, but under the ground roots are going dormant for the winter. Once the days get longer and the weather warmer, shoots begin to appear. This is a hard time of year for this garden because it is easy to walk on them not realizing it is actually a garden. The first to bloom are a few bulbs that catch your eyes. New this year will be labels for many of the plantings in this garden.

2012 Annual Student Art Show

5.12StudentArtShowMark your calendars for one of the highlights of the spring! The four Amherst public schools will be exhibiting at the Annual Student Art Show being held during the month of May at the Amherst Town Library. This is a wonderful opportunity to see the library walls and display cases filled with the best examples of beautiful high quality art projects that our local students are creating under the professional guidance of the Amherst and Souhegan School District teachers.

The Friends of the Library will place more than 400 artworks throughout the Library, including watercolors, oils, pastels, photographs, pen and pencil drawings, furniture, fabric creations, collages, masks and sculptures. The exhibit will be on display from May 5 through May 31, with a reception for the students and families on Mother's Day, Sunday, May 13, from 2:00 - 4:00.

Thanks to The Friends of the Library volunteers this show has been a huge success for over 15 years. They sponsor and coordinate all the activities from picking up the art at the schools to hanging them throughout the Library, to contributing cookies and punch for the student reception, to removing the art and returning them at the end of the month.

The Friends are now seeking volunteers to help with various projects throughout the year. If you are interested in contributing to the community with some of your time and enjoy working with a fabulous group or people please contact Kim Ayers for details at 249-9108.

Remember, the library is a happening place and your library card is your ticket to free books, magazines, music, movies, Internet access, enriching programs and much more!

Sincerely,
