The Friends of the Library Need Volunteers
volunteers

The Friends of the Amherst Town Library is a non-profit all volunteer group that devotes time to support the library through fund raising efforts along with developing programs that enrich the library's cultural services to our community.

We are seeking volunteers who would be interested in helping out with some of the many services we provide, including: membership drives, museum passes, fundraisers, newsletters, book sales, museum trips, library book bags and note cards, student art shows, professional art exhibits, display case collections, hospitality for events, book groups, and holiday decorations just to name a few.

Greetings!

The sun was warm but the wind was chill.
You know how it is with an April day
When the sun is out and the wind is still,
You're one month on in the middle of May.
But if you so much as dare to speak,
A cloud comes over the sunlit arch,
A wind comes off a frozen peak,
And you're two months back in the middle of March.

--Robert Frost (1874-1963)
No Pulitzer Awarded for Fiction
pulitzer prize
The annual winners of the Pulitzer Prize were announced this Monday, April 16. To the disappointment of many, the committee did not name a fiction winner this year.

The three finalists finalists in the fiction category were: "Train Dreams," by Denis Johnson, a novella about an orphan in the old American West; "Swamplandia!" by Karen Russell, about a family and its failing alligator-wrestling theme park; and "The Pale King," by the late David Foster Wallace, a posthumously completed novel, assembled from his notes that explores boredom and bureaucracy in the American workplace.

Sig Gissler, administrator of the Pulitzer Prizes, said the "main reason" that no prize was awarded was that no one of the three entries received a majority vote. 1977 was the last year that the fiction prize was not awarded.

The nonfiction prize went to Stephen Greenblatt for his book, "The Swerve: How the World Became Modern." Finalists in this category were: "One Hundred Names For Love: A Stroke, a Marriage, and the Language of Healing," by Diane Ackerman, and "Unnatural Selection: Choosing Boys over Girls, and the Consequences of a World Full of Men," by Mara Hvistendahl.
