Our Amherst Library is a gem that has blessed our village. It is beautiful to look at and so pleasant to visit. However, without the jewels inside--our staff-- it would simply be a pretty shell. The Sunday evening events have been such fun, very diverse, and quite enriching. No wonder they are so well attended. The childrens' area surpasses most with engaging materials, loads of space and comfort. Every question or resource need is addressed and/or researched but even better, information is patiently offered to help us become more independent in our own researches. I eagerly walk in and always walk out with a smile.

Spotlight on Robert B. Parker

ParkerDevoted fans are mourning the loss of best-selling mystery author, Robert B. Parker, who died last Monday at his home in Cambridge, MA. Parker authored more than 60 books, including westerns, young-adult novels, and multiple mystery series.

Parker's most famous character is Spenser, a Boston private eye and the hero of nearly 40 novels. Parker was well loved for his descriptive scenes of Boston and the Northeast and witty dialogue.

If you have never read one of his books, you can learn more about Robert Parker, his Spencer novels, the Jesse Stone mysteries, and Sunny Randall mysteries through NoveList, one of the library's subscription databases.

If you've been a loyal Parker fan and are wondering what you will read now, NoveList also has recommendations of authors who have similar appeal.

Read-alikes:
Raymond Chandler, Stephen Cannell, Robert Crais, Steven Brust, Loren Estleman

Novelist also provides annotated book lists, reviews, book discussion guides, and more. Please ask a Reference Librarian for a brief tour of NoveList on your next visit.

What's Your Opinion of the Amazon Kindle?

With so many new e-reader devices on the market, we are interested to hear what you think of the Amazon Kindle. Is the Kindle a must-have gadget, or is there a
dealbreaker or two that keeps it from missing the mark?

If you haven't tried one yet, the library has two Kindles that you can experiment with. Both are loaded with 14 fiction, nonfiction, youth and teen titles including bestsellers such as Jodi Picoult's "Handle with Care", "American Lion: Andrew Jackson in the White House" by Jon Meacham, and pop-culture sensation "Twilight" by Stephanie Meyer. The loan period is 7 days.

If you have taken one of these devices for test run, did you find it easy to use? Is it as enjoyable as a regular book? What are the pros and cons? Would you recommend it to your friends?

Please send you comments to Kim Ayers (Chair of the Friends of the Amherst Town Library). The Friends will include your feedback in their spring newsletter.
Remember, the library is a happening place and your library card is your ticket to free books, magazines, music, movies, Internet access, enriching programs and much more!

If you missed one of our earlier issues you can view it here. As always, please feel free to contact us if you have suggestions for improving this newsletter or questions about any of our library services.
