Ten Hours Until Dawn
Please join us on Tuesday, January 19 at 7 PM for a special visit by lecturer and award winning author Michael Tougias.
Ten Hours Until Dawn: The True Story of Heroism and Tragedy Aboard the Can Do in the Blizzard of '78 tells the story of what happened the awful night five men set out from Gloucester to assist a lost Coast Guard boat and an oil tanker that was in a Mayday situation. Tougias will show slides and play audio recordings which were taped on the night of the storm.
Don't miss this gripping story of peril at sea. Register by calling 673-2288 or through the online calendar of events.
This program is funded in cooperation with the New Hampshire Humanities Council. |
Changes in Free Public Computer Access The Attention computer users! The library has new software managing our public computers and printers. Instead of waiting for a staff member, now CASSIE allows you to sign on to a computer yourself. Just take a seat at an available computer & enter your library card number to begin a session. Visitors may request a guest card at the Circulation Desk.
Among other benefits, CASSIE will calculate your print charges and show you how much your print job costs before you decide to print. CASSIE will also maintain security and allow you to temporarily lock your computer and unlock it with your library card.
Please note: This new system requires that you prepay for print jobs. For you convenience, you may maintain a cash balance in your account for this purpose. Please ask a staff member for more details on your next visit. |
From the Children's Librarian... The Children's Room will be extremely busy in 2010. Storytimes for babies, toddlers, and preschoolers will resume on January 5th. To view the full schedule, click here. No registration is required for storytime, so stop by anytime!
We will also be starting up a new book club called the Book Bunch for children
ages 6 to 8, which will begin on January 28th at 3:45 PM. During our meetings we'll do read alouds, reader's theater and a craft. Please register to participate on our Calendar of Events.
I'd also like to tell everybody about the new children's room blog (http://amherstchildrensroom.blogspot.com) that will soon be taking the place of the children's room webpage. The blog will be updated regularly with book recommendations, recent additions to our collection, event announcements, as well as regular reminders about what is new in the children's room and in the world of children's literature. Feel free to leave any comments or questions on the blog. I especially welcome young patrons to participate.
On the blog you'll also notice links to our databases, the library catalog, and helpful websites for Wilkins & AMS Projects. The later are now included on our new Del.icio.us account. Del.icio.us is a site where thousands of people organize and tag their favorite online links and resources (kind of like the bookmarks feature on your web browser). More links will added to the library's account (http://delicious.com/amherstlibrary) as I continue to find new and helpful websites for the children to use. If there are any sites that you feel should be added, please let me know.
