2012 4-H Gala

Save the date for the 3rd annual Iowa 4-H Foundation Gala!

The event will be held at the downtown Des Moines Marriott on February 25, 2012. Planning is underway for another great evening of food, fun, fundraising and live entertainment. The Iowa 4-H Foundation is proud to welcome Glen Mente as interim director of the Iowa 4-H Foundation. Glen is a past president of the Iowa 4-H Foundation ('00-'01) and retired Senior Vice President of Kent Feeds. Joe Leisz is no longer employed by the Foundation. A search committee is conducting a nationwide search to identify a replacement. Contact Glen if you are interested in knowing more about the position.

Iowa State Fair 2011 at a Glance

Did you make it to the Iowa State Fair this year? Truly nothing compares to the energy we experienced in the 4-H Exhibit building and amongst the 4-H livestock events. Here is a quick update of the special 4-H events at the Iowa State Fair.
Film Festival LogoThe Iowa 4-H Film Festival showcased videos created by youth to Educate, Inspire, or Just 4 Fun. Congratulations to all contestants who participated in this competition.  Read more about the Film Festival!  or peruse the photo gallery

Robotics 2011The Bratney Companies 4-H Robotics Challenge  featured 13 teams building robots using the Lego Mindstorms NXT platform and a "junk drawer. Awards were presented in the areas of engineering, leadership, creativity, and problem solving.

Cook This! 201122 teams of youth tested their culinary skills and gained cooking knowledge in the Cook This! 4-H Culinary Challenge. Teams were tested on their knowledge of food safety, produce identification, food preparation and presentation, and proper use of kitchen equipment, as well as a new category this year: communications.

Stitch This ParticipantThe Stitch This! 4-H Design Challenge encouraged teams to deconstruct a selection of more than 200 prom dresses to create a new prom dress with the theme America the Beautiful. The top three designs will be prototyped, mass-produced and available at 65 stores nationwide as part of Stacey's Prom and Formalwear 2012 Prom Line.

More than 100 4-H members from across Iowa received scholarships for their outstanding accomplishments in 4-H.  Youth from 31 Iowa counties were recognized by the Iowa 4-H Foundation.

The final day of the Iowa State Fair was very busy recognizing those volunteers who have made a difference in the lives of 4-H members. The Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame inducted 121 individuals representing 89 counties.

LivestockThere were also many 4-H members showcasing their accomplishments in the livestock barns and show arenas. With over 4500 number of animals exhibited by 1639 4-H livestock participants, 4-H was represented all over the fairgrounds.

National 4-H Week: October 2-8, 2011
National 4-H Week is only a few weeks away. Show your support of 4-H Clover 2 and let everyone know you are a strong 4-H supporter.
Here are a few things you can do to get yourself and others, excited about National 4-H Week:

1.    Share your 4-H story and the impact it has had.

   

2.     Wear a 4-H T-shirt or 4-H green.

 

3.   Color Facebook and Twitter GREEN! with your profile photo changed to a 4-H clover.

 

4.    Give back to your community with a 4-H service project.

 

5.    Attend Make a Difference Day at the Iowa 4-H Center in October 8th from 9am-3pm. Contact the John Roosa (515) 795-3338 for more information.

Golf Tourneys Net $80,000+ for Iowa 4-H
The 15th annual Iowa 4-H Foundation Going for the Green Golf Tournaments were a huge success this summer with a net revenue of more than $80,000.  The Central Iowa golf tourney was held at the Wakonda Club on July 18th and the Eastern Iowa tourney was held at Riverside Casino & Resort on August 25th. Save the date for a NEW! Western Iowa 4-H Golf Tournament coming in 2012! (June 22nd at Emerald Hills Golf Course in Okoboji). If you're interested in serving on the planning committee or sponsoring this event contact Albert Grunenwald at (515) 294-4780.

4-H & Tractor Supply Paper Clover Campaign
Paper CloverThe fall Tractor Supply Paper Clover promotion will be held from Wednesday, Sept. 21  to Sunday, Oct. 2 and is a great way to build momentum for National 4-H Week on October 2-8! Visit a Tractor Supply store near you and purchase a paper clover. The proceeds support county, state and national 4-H programs.
