Burkies at the Caledonia County Fair

Burkies at the Fair

fair

Three vanloads of staff and students hit the Caledonia County Fairgrounds on Friday evening, August 28th.  Some students dressed the part while others did their best to try EVERY "fair food" item sold: fried dough, onion flowers, fried Snickers(!), apple crisp, sausages, French fries, and cotton candy (known as "fairy hair" in Australia, as Luke told us).  The food may have taken its toll on some, but the rumor was that a few lost their insides on a couple of the rides!  The $1 games were also a hit with students and staff going head to head on the water gun shooting match, and the peach basket toss.  It was a great evening with lots of local color and florescent lights to brighten the night.

Orientation

Orientation

On Sunday, August 30th the Burkies embarked on the yearly adventure known as the All-School Orientation.  Traditionally this event is characterized by a series of endurance oriented events to challenge the body and mind, inspire a sense of community among the students, and to get everyone thoroughly lost somewhere along the way.  This year the event lived up to its (in)famous reputation as six teams of Burke athletes and staff raced their way behind Burke Mountain to some arduous mudpits, then by bike to an overgrown stretch of ditch that needed clearing, then to Bald Hill Pond where teams canoed across the lake and back, and finally across to Center Pond to a set of kayaks and a rope swing.  Along the way there were various tasks to complete in order to find out where to go next, such as puzzles that each team put together and flipped over to reveal a map on the back, as well as bottles with messages buried in mud.  By the end of the 8+ hour race, the students and staff were all pretty exhausted but seemed to enjoy the post-race BBQ while some kids paddled around in kayaks and played on the rope swing.

BMA Soccer

Both the boys and girls soccer teams are 1-1 going into their third game of the season. They won both games on Saturday against SMS with the help of a strong cheering section.  Unfortunately they lost both games on Monday to GMVS but are looking forward to a rematch with them on Parents' Weekend.  Many thanks to Steve and Michelle Volk for their gathering on Saturday and to the Gayle and Paul Brown for feeding the troops on Monday.

Ian Ethan Case at BMA

Ian Ethan Case
This past Saturday (9/5/09) BMA was treated to a concert by elite nordic racer and professional musician Ian Ethan Case.   Ian played a double necked acoustic guitar.  The top neck is a 12 string, and the bottom neck is a 6 string.  Most people who own such an instrument play one neck at a time.  For most of the concert, Ian played both necks simultaneously.  (The tuning of each neck is also unique to each song that he plays.)
It was an amazing concert.  The BMA community thanks Ian for coming and playing for us.  And thank you to Pete Phillips for helping to get Ian here to play.
You can find out more information about Ian by going to WWW.IanEthan.com.
