Why Come to Keene?

For Arlo Guthrie
November 19   8:00PM

Arlo Guthrie returns to Keene's Colonial Theatre for a pre-Thanksgiving performance filled with great music and his trademark humorous storytelling.  Arlo Guthrie's performance is a feast for the ears and the imagination.

While we do not have Alice's Restaurant in Keene, we have many other terrific places to dine before the show!  Please contact me if you need help with ground transportation, restaurant or room reservations.

Barbeque

It's barbeque Saturday at Monadnock Aviation!  We'll provide the food; you provide the hangar flying.  Rain or shine at noon.
Guest Speaker

John Katsaros is a World War II veteran.  A
B-17 crew member shot down over Reims, France, John parachuted from 25,000 feet.  He survived, was captured and became a POW.  He obtained his freedom after numerous harrowing escape attempts.

We are honored to announce that John will be with us on December 4th.  He'll join us for our barbeque and then tell his amazing story of resistance, escape and evasion.  Please join us for lunch, view John's slide show, and hear the recollections of a brave man.
Goodbye and Hello

Congratulations to Tim Price, who has been our A&P IA mechanic since the birth of Monadnock Aviation.  Tim was offered and accepted a terrific opportunity with Winco Helicopters.  While we are saddened to see him go, we wish him the best of luck and are grateful for all of his hard work here at Keene.  Tim will be greatly missed.

After conducting a nationwide search for another A&P IA mechanic, we would like to welcome Eddie Smart to Monadnock Aviation.  Eddie has fifteen years of general aviation experience to include private and
corporate flight departments.  He served as the Director of Maintenance for a flight school and Part 135 charter operation.  He has attended the Robinson R-22/44 factory training program and has several years invested in maintaining helicopters.  He brings a big toolbox and big experience!  We invite all of our customers in to meet Eddie and discuss any concerns you may be having with your aircraft.
Love your Engine

Found frost on the wings of our aircraft this morning!  If your winter means more hot cocoa and less flying, then your aircraft engine will miss you.

An aircraft which sits unused for extended periods of time is a good candidate for corrosion, engine damage, and, potentially, engine failure.  This is expensive and could be catastrophic.

What can you do to protect your engine? The only true protection is to keep your engine oil free of moisture and acid, and to keep oil on the internal engine parts.  These can be accomplished by flying regularly-- taxiing around the field a few times is not enough.

If you do not expect to fly for months at a time, please contact us.  We may be able to exercise your aircraft for you or discuss a maintenance procedure to help preserve the engine.
Winter Flying

Thunderstorms are out, ice and snow are on the way.  Now is a good time to brush up on your aviation weather knowledge and factors which may impact you during winter flying.

AOPA's Air Safety Institute offers Weather Wise -- Precipitation and Icing.  This is an online course which takes about 45 minutes to complete.  The video illustrates that a pilot's experience level is not necessarily proportionate to their decision making skills.

If you want to learn more, there is a safety seminar "New England Weather and the Winter Pilot" scheduled for November 15 at 7:00pm at Metro Air Services, Westover, Mass.
Construction at EEN

From Keene's Airport Manager:

On Wednesday, November 10, 2010, construction will begin on improvements to the airfield electrical system.  Specifically, the Runway 2/20 lights and cables will be replaced, a new electrical regulator will be installed, taxiway lights around the terminal apron will be installed, some airfield signage will be upgraded and the east side taxiway lighting circuit will be split into two separate circuits.  These improvements are designed to improve the reliability of the lighting system and provide better visibility.  They will also enhance the safety for all that use the facility.

During these upgrades, there will be an impact on users.  FAA regulations mandate closure of a runway whenever there is an open trench adjacent to the pavement.  To minimize this impact, we have required the contractor to return all runways to operational condition at the end of each workday.  Construction activities will the resume the following morning at approximately 7:30 AM (Monday through Friday).  Aircraft will be able to use Runway 2/20 before 7:30 AM and after 5:00 PM.  Work adjacent to Runway 2/20 should be completed within 15 working days.  With the exception of the runway intersection work, Runway 14/32 will not be affected.

You are encouraged to check NOTAM's on a regular basis for updates on closures and other construction information.  Please call (357-9835) or e-mail me at emattern@ci.keene.nh.us with specific questions.

Got Crosswind?

Do you think you can handle a crosswind landing?  Take a look at this video from the landing capability testing for the Boeing 777.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ljOxo0s33sI

The titles are in Portuguese (I think).  Roughly translated, they say Monadnock Aviation is awesome!  :)
Safety Seminars

Did you know you can receive notices whenever a safety seminar is scheduled near you?  FAASafety.Gov  has information about seminars, the FAA Safety Team, the WINGS Program, and more.

****Note change in this seminar date*****
December 7 Post Accident Survival
Most aircraft accidents are survivable. Whether the pilot and passengers remain alive to be rescued is often a matter of whether they were prepared for the post-accident survival situation. This seminar will focus on how to be prepared for basic land survival in winter conditions.  The speakers are John Wood from the Portland FSDO and Rick Bendel, CFI.

January 18 - Medical Certifications
Dr. Clark, FAA New England Region Regional Flight Surgeon, and Dr. Ray, Deputy Flight Surgeon, will discuss pilot medical certifications.  We will make sure to leave plenty of time for individual questions and answers.
