Barbeque At Montpelier This Saturday

Just a reminder that, although it is the first Saturday of the month, we are not hosting our barbeque this weekend.

We are taking a break this weekend to show support for Sambel's Restaurant in Montpelier, VT (KMPV).  They are offering all you can eat burgers and dogs for $5.00 from noon to 4pm.  This in an effort to drum up support and keep their airport restaurant open.

Please support Sambel's this Saturday.  We look forward to seeing you on the 17th for our normal barbeque extravaganza!

IMC Club

The first meeting of the Keene IMC Club will be April 12th at 6:00pm at Monadnock Aviation.  I had hoped to have the agenda ready to go with this newsletter but time has gotten away from me.  I will send it out shortly.

Our goal is to provide a monthly setting for instrument rated pilots to gather and keep the terms, procedures, nuances, and pitfalls of instrument flying fresh in the mind.  This is our solution to the saying "if you don't use it you lose it".

This is a free club.  While mainly focused on instrument rated pilots, any non-instrument pilots are also welcome to attend.
Keene RCO is Active

The RCO at Keene is now active.  You can file and pick up your clearance from Bangor Radio on 121.6.
Keene Aviation Day

We are thrilled to announce our second annual Keene Aviation Day.  June 5th is the date with a raindate of June 6th.  Keep your toes crossed that we have good weather.

Events of the day will include an airshow, radio controlled aircraft, a parachute jumping demonstration, EAA Young Eagle's Flights,  lots of aircraft on static display, tethered hot air balloon rides, helicopter rides, food vendors (all non-profit organizations from our community), face painting, and more.

If you are interested in flying for the Young Eagles, or want to volunteer to help work the show please let me know.  We also are looking for aircraft to be on static display.  We can make it available to the public to touch and sit in, or rope it off for viewing only if you prefer.
Safety Seminars

Did you know you can receive notices whenever a safety seminar is scheduled near you?  FAASafety.Gov  has information about seminars, the FAA Safety Team, the WINGS Program, and more.

April 20-  Are you Covered? Doug Tibbs, from NationAir, will deliver a lively presentation on various aviation insurance issues.  They will include tips on how aircraft owners can lower their renewal premiums, fact and fiction regarding renter's insurance, and how an FBO's insurance covers you and how it does not.  We will also save time to answer your specific questions.  I promise that Doug will NOT try to sell you insurance!  His goal is to unravel the complexities of an important and ubiquitous aviation product.

Doug is a fantastic speaker.  He is a former corporate pilot and has been an aviation insurance broker for 8 years.  Doug runs the largest aviation insurance office in the northeast for one of the largest aviation insurance specialists in the country. He is also a CFI/CFII.

May 18- Boston TRACON - An Evening With ATC.  Airspace can be confusing; don't let it get the best of you.  Boston TRACON Air Traffic Control Specialist Bob Adelizzi will discuss how to conduct safe and efficient flight operations in different classes of airspace.  Be confident and competent while using ATC services and flying in controlled airspace.

Bob has been a controller at Boston TRACON for twenty five years and affiliated with the FAA safety program for over twenty.   His "Evening with ATC" presentations are the highest attended safety programs in New England.

June 15Flying the New York VFR Corridor.  Flying the NY VFR corridor is an effective way to transition the New York Metropolitan area and is also an awe-filled scenic flight. However, the risks are numerous and the flight could become awful rather than awe-filled. This seminar presents all the hazards and risks, and then shows how to fly the route safely.  Learn all the important reporting points, safe altitudes, where and how the helicopters operate, and proper frequencies to use. The knowledge gained from this seminar will allow you to fly the corridor more safely and with reduced risk to all aircraft in the airspace.

Doug is the National Certificated Flight Instructor of the Year for 2004. A Master Certified Flight Instructor, Gold Seal Instructor, and Designated Pilot Examiner, he is based at the Columbia County Airport (1B1) in Hudson, NY.

The Airport Manager Says...

As we begin to appreciate the first signs of spring our thoughts turn toward airfield improvements. There are a number of projects planned for this year's construction season which are designed to maintain and enhance our infrastructure.

One of these projects is a continuation of enhancements to the airfield electrical system.  The current runway lighting system uses direct buried electrical cables that are in excess of 20 years old.  As the insulation breaks down, electrical shorts develop and cause service interruptions.  The regulators, transformers and switches servicing the system are also outdated.  Working with the FAA and the State DOT, Bureau of Aeronautics, we have developed a capital improvement project to continue the upgrade to the airfield electrical system.  This project will include the installation of conduit adjacent to Runway 2/20, replacement of all power feeds, replacement of edge light transformers, installation of new regulators and other improvements in the new electrical vault.  Provided that funding is available, Taxiway R, Taxiway S and the terminal apron will also be fitted with new edge lights.

These improvements have already been engineered and bid.
Due to FAA safety regulations with regard to open trenches adjacent to a runway, the availability of Runway 2/20 will be impacted during construction.  Every attempt will be made to minimize these impacts.  NOTAM's will be issued when any runway will be affected.  The construction adjacent to the runways is expected to take about three weeks.  The timing of construction will be dependant of the issuance of grants.  As this project will result in long-term benefits for those that use the airport, your understanding during short-term inconvenience would be appreciated.
