Born in Racine, Wisc., Chris Berg didn't always know he wanted to make wine. He graduated from the University of Kansas with a bachelor's in English. It wasn't until his parents relocated to Oregon that Chris began his wine making career. In 1999, his parents planted 7 acres of mostly Pinot Noir on their 20-acre property near Yamhill in the Yamhill-Carlton District of the Willamette Valley. The 7 acres contain mostly Pinot Noir and a couple of rows of Pinot Gris. In 2002, the Bergs picked their first harvest of 3 tons, making only 72 cases of Pinot Noir. As Roots has grown, Chris decided to purchase grapes from Cherry Grove, Apolloni and Leroy Vineyards. Roots Winery is Chris and his wife Hilary Berg. They grow their grapes and make exceptional wines. They have a unique style and new ideas that add to and enrich the range of Oregon Pinot Noirs.
