Crestwood Country Day Camp

August 16, 2011

Dear Crestwood Families and Friends,

We are often asked by Crestwood parents, "What will be new for my child next summer?"  Well, that is a great question. With such a wide variety of activities, there is always something new.  If you want to know what happens when your son or daughter gets another year older at Crestwood, keep reading...

 NEW ACTIVITIES BY GRADE
  • Preschool - Everything at Crestwood is new for our 3 year olds.  Our 4 year olds begin using some of the more challenging playgrounds such as our playscape (2-story playground) and playland (big red slides).  In addition, we add mini-golf, bowling, gaga ball, and our giant inflatable obstacle course.  Many of our 4 year olds begin attending for a full day and enjoy two separate swim periods per day (one instruction and one free swim).  Mini-day and Junior day enjoy one double period swim (with both instruction and free swim).
  • Kindergarten - Our campers entering kindergarten begin some new sports like floor hockey and tennis.  They also enjoy use of our other new inflatable with various skill games.  The summer sleds are another new activity for this age.  Cheerleading is added as a special activity just for the girls. On rainy days, kindergarten campers begin going on 1/2 day field trips for bowling or indoor sports.  Kindergarten campers also move up to our main pool area where we still have shallow pools for beginners but can offer greater challenges like deep water testing and advanced strokes for others. Our Mandarin Chinese Culture Club is an optional club choice beginning in Kindergarten.
  • First Grade - Campers entering first grade transition out of many of our pre-school/kindergarten facilities.  They visit our main Arts and Crafts area, upper camp music area,  big gaga courts and begin playing their sports on our shaded back fields.  New to the program is our golf range, jewelry (crafts), drama, and the super popular bungee trampolines.  First graders have a slightly more active (sports) day and enjoy one period a week of exclusive use of our FUNDOME (the gym).  In the event children begin to develop special interests and tastes, we begin allowing pull-out clubs at this age in various sports and other activities.  Chess and Karate are also new options for this age.  First grade boys have male counselors for the first time.
  • Second Grade - Thwind tunnelere are many great additions for 2nd graders.  By this age, campers can participate in every activity that Crestwood offers.  This includes Archery, Batting Cages, Trail Biking, Fitness Room, Alpine Climbing Tower, Big Zipline and Ping Pong. Joining our Drama Club and performing in our summer musical is a popular choice for this age.  Most of our newest and youngest members of the swim club (team) are second graders. Second graders have an even more active day with some additional sports periods and even some double periods for enhanced game play.  This summer our second graders are the youngest campers able to enjoy the thrill of the Vertical Wind Tunnel (simulated skydiving).
  • Third Grade -What makes the program at this age so special is the elective program.  All third graders begin enjoying weekly elective choices.  We give the campers a wide variety of choices which include our most popular sports, adventure, creative and performing arts activities.  Each camper gets two choices per week. Their first choice will be enjoyed two afternoons per week for a double period (and lasts for 2 weeks) and their second choice will be enjoyed for a double period on Fridays (and lasts for 4 weeks).  Campers enjoy the additional double periods of sports in their schedule, tennis on the main courts and the tournaments set up between the groups.  In addition, our new Painting Club, our new Drawing Club, Rocketry Club, and our ever popular Fine Arts Club with Mr. Ted are also big hits.  This summer we started a new Vocal Performance Club called Crestwood Idol for our 3rd-6th graders.  We are looking forward to their concert on Monday.  We almost forgot to mention, third graders enjoy their first Crestwood Late-Night.
  • Fourth Grade -  Fourth graders continue to enjoy everything that Crestwood has to offer. For the first time, these campers enjoy regular field trips.  Each month, the fourth graders enjoy a trip. This summer they enjoyed a day at Adventureland and also a day fishing on a charter boat.  These days are highlights of the summer.  At our annual Late Night, fourth graders stay until 11 PM.  It's crazy fun! New and expanded elective choices are available for the fourth graders.
  • Fifth Grade - The biggest addition to this program is the weekly trip.  At least once per week, these campers go on an all day trip to fun venues on Long Island.  The beach, Bounce U, Funzone, Claytime and bowling are just a few examples.  The highlight is our combo trip to Splish Splash that ends with their overnight.
  • Sixth Grade - We're not sure what our sixth graders like better: being the big shots on campus or the two trips per week to some pretty awesome venues.  Our sixth graders enjoy trips beyond Long Island such as NYC, Great Adventure, Dorney Park and an off-site overnight trip.
  • Seventh to Tenth Grade - This is the Crestwood Teen Travel Program.  Teens travel every day to venues throughout the Northeast.  There are short overnight trips for all Teens.  For our Teen "Plus" campers we offer week long overnight trips.  Currently, our Teen Plus campers are enjoying a week in San Antonio, Texas.  Next summer, they will spend a week in Toronto and Niagara Falls and a week in Anaheim and Los Angeles, California.
.
We hope this brief description was helpful to you and your family. As you can see there is a tremendous amount offered at Crestwood and something new for everyone every summer.  Don't forget this list doesn't even include all the new facilities and activities that will be coming to Crestwood next summer.  We've only told you about the Trapeze, Circus Arts and Puppy Program so far.

Please note that this list represents what current Crestwood campers enjoy this summer by age.  From summer to summer we do review the program in an effort to make it even more exciting. As a result, some changes to the list above may occur for next summer.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call one of us, your Division Head or our office staff.  We look forward to a great last week of camp and seeing you for many more summers.

Sincerely,

Mark H.,  Jeff, and Mark T.
